So I've been researching the best ways to get rid of majanoes/apitasia.

  1. Inject them with boiling water
  2. Inject them with Joe Juice
  3. Inject them / a home made paste like kalk
  4. Get a Peppermint Shrimp/Butterfly fish/both if you have both pests

But I think I might have another way to get rid of them. . . . HOT GLUE!!!

Mind you that none of the majanos are next to corals that I Heart. . . I think I'll be able to take the rock out that they are stuck to.  Poke them so they scrunch up and then hot glue their butts to the rock.

You think I'm extreme?  I HATE THESE THINGS!!!

Any of you have a better suggestion for me? Embarrassed  I don't think the joe juice is working at all. . .

Unfortunately, the hot glue may not completely cover the hole and they will escape. Also the stress of the hot glue may cause them to spawn and spread.

The best method I have ever tried is to take the rock to a tank that has Butterflyfish and many hungry Peppermint shrimp.Smile

I had a few majano's for a long time. After a while, I thought I would get rid of them. I tried Joe's juice and kalk paste. Both of these worked to kill the individual majanos that I treated. They would close up tight and I couldn't get them out. I thought wow, that worked! I was wrong! The more I tried to kill them, the more I had. In trying to kill them I turned a few ugly aptasia into a PLAGUE.

Then I tried a butterfly fish from the Aquarium. They were able to show me, that the fish ate majano. At first, I didn't notice any difference. Then "presto", they were ALL gone. Unfortunately, I could never catch the butterfly because he would hide behind all the rocks.

But...after almost a year, I have a few majanos starting to show up. This time, I am going to leave them alone. If they become a plague again, I will get another fish to eat them.

I like the kleins butterfly. They are excellant at eating aptaisa majanos and tulip. The problem is once they are done that can go after corals so they will have to be removed after. Then add pepermints to keep it under control. Its best if the pest anemones are just on a rock or two to remove the rock. Its better then fighting with them. The smallest peace of dna left behing can grow more of these anemones.

Either the Aiptasia are too big or the Peppermints are not hungry enough.

After getting some free stuff (of which I really didn't want) from a friend getting out of reefing, I noticed a number of majanoes appearing from various pieces now in my tank.  I started with a heavy dose of Kent Kalkwasser mixed with water in a syringe/needle.  I would inject the majanoes at the base. Usually by the next day, they would be gone. Things were going quite well, so I decided to take a break. After neglecting my tank for a couple of weeks, I noticed the majanoes were taking over my tank.  I started taking rock out and baking it in the sun. This got old. So I decided to take the tank down and just move on.  I got about 50-100 blue/red leg hermits before doing so from a good buddy (different friend). After about a week, I noticed they were all gone. Oddly enough my wife says she would watch the hermits eating them every day.  Who would of guessed.  Sounds like I got lucky, because everyone I talk to says hermits don't eat majanoes.

If you do the Kalk Paste thing make sure you completely bury then in the paste.  Don't just dab it on, but bury it deep.  The pile of paste will look unsightly for a couple days, but it does a nice job of destroying the offender.  I can even kill those nasty green palys this way.

Nasty green palys?  Does anyone have some "nasty green palys" they'd like to donate to me?  Will Spencer included?  My little 20g is sorely in need of anything -- UGLY CORALS ROCK.  For some reason, I'm not drawn to the frogspawn and LPS and SPS that everyone else is.  I dig the brown palys, the normal drab stuff people flush.

Oh, and I think my majano is one of the coolest things in my nano.  I'll take donations of small rubble infested with  majanos too, and I'll trade you a majano-free piece of rubble in return (if you don't live too far from Riverton, that is....).  You can keep your aiptasia.  I have my limits....

No.  They only eat aptasia.  Eating both would be too good to be true.

I call them "Nasty Green Paly's because they take over and kill off many other things.  I had a rock covered in hundreds of beautiful green and brown zoanthids.  1 Green Paly got into the bunch and 6 months later I had hundreds of green Paly's and zero beautiful zoanthids.  They grow as fast as aptasia and are at least as much nusance.

Also, you can never have just one Manjano.  Next week you'll have 2, then 4, then 8, 16, 32, and a whole tank full.  Too bad cool corals don't spread as fast, although then they would be pests too.LOL

I run really low lights, it seems, because nothing I put in there really multiplies.  Majanos -- I've got one about the size of a half-dollar.  There he sits.  No multiplying -- six months now.  Will, can I help you reduce your nasty-green-paly population?  And Dion -- I teach at Weber State.  Off for the summer, but when I start again, I'd love to swing up your way and reduce your population of these palys as well.

So there you go -- how do you control pest anemones?  Find someone lower on the reefkeeping totem-pole and convince them (unless they're already convinced) that majanos and green palys are cool and get 'em to take them from you.  Problem solved.

(Sorry for hijacking the thread, folks).

Suzy,
As Will states the Berghia do not eat majano.  I tested it with a hungry pair with no success.  I am thinking about retrying with my first batch of young nudis that tear apart the aptasia as soon as I feed them the anenome.  It is pretty cool to see two small aptasia gone within an hour however!

I've honestly found the best thing that works for me is kalk paste. I've tried joes juice and stop aptasia with no success. after you get the majority of them down.. than add some peppermints... they should take care of the rest. The better option is obviously bergias...but sometimes they are expensive and unless you have a HUGE infestation of them.. they die before they find the next one in a large tank.

I do the same for majanos with the kalk paste
