Does anyone have experience with this? Does the shrimp constantly kick up sand dust in the aquarium making it look cloudy all the time? i temporarily am storing a large pistol shrimp in a nano tank with the Fuji Pink sand that is pretty fine and I intended to move it to my new tank which has even finer sand. However, the nano tank is totally cloudy now. could be moving rocks as well trying to catch a fish and in time it will settle. Just wondering if this is a constant nightmare for people and something I shoudln't introduce to my tank.

It should not cause a problem for your tank, but it will be nearly torture for the shrimp. You will need to supply it with lots of shells and small pieces of live rock...otherwise he will have no way to build a burrow.

Cool. I figured that and I did put in a lot of rubble.

Pistol shrimp will constantly move your sand around.  If you don't like that you should not keep one.  They don't simply dig a burrow once and let it be.  They are always and forever redoing them and making new ones.

As ReefdUp said it will also need a supply of larger pieces of something to help it keep its burrow from collapsing.

It really limits what you can have on your sandbed. I have one and it's constantly moving things around.

They will take frags off your sandbed...but all the ones I have had over the years never made my tank cloudy.

Thanks. My main question was whether or not they make the tank cloudy if it's fine sand. I realize they will make new homes under rocks, etc. and I'm also prepared not to have any small frags lying on the sand bed. That's why i haven't transferred him yet. I've been slowly gluing the dozens of frags I transferred into this new tank on to rocks.

Yes if it is the really fine sand it will make it cloudy, I had sugar fine sand in my tank when I got my pistol and by the next day I could not see in the tank. I swapped the sand out for a bit heavier grain and now it's fine.

hmmm. i'm not about to swap out my sand and once I add the shrimp to the tank, i doubt I'll ever get him out again. This makes me nervous. Really a shame because the shrimp has already paired with an Aurora goby which should be in the main tank already although i haven't seen him yet.

I guess I'll keep him in the nano for several more days to see if it calms down or if it's a continual thing.

The sand I had was like muddy sand , I got it at petsmart so maybe you have the one the is just the step up and that's the new stuff I have and it's fine.

What i have is a mix of Fiji Pink Arag-Alive (grain size .5-1.5mm) and Oolite Ocean Direct from BRS (.25-1.5mm). In the back of the tank i also mixed in the typical much larger grain sand because I knew that's where the shrimp like to burrow. I think my dad ended up mixing that in everywhere else though while i wasn't looking and I forgot to instruct him otherwise.

I have debatably finer sand than that and my pistol just steals frags and anything else that's small (shells usually) and uses them for his burrow. Never had any problems with cloudiness though. It's been nearly two years with him.

From my personal experience .5 mm and above grain size will be fine.  It was in my tank.

just recently dropped my tiger pistol shrimp off at the fish store, he could not control his desire to take anything and everything into his burrow, that said he was fun when he was in my smaller tank before i tore it down, he and I had different plans for the 40 gallon breeder

Well, good or bad I just barely put him in the main tank. I've glued down everything so we'll see.

So I got up this morning to check on him and sure enough, one side of the tank's corals were half buried in sand. I also noticed that I forgot to glue down a solitary mushroom frag and it was, of course, inside his burrow. He had tons of rubble, dead shells, etc. to use but he had to pull the one frag that wasn't glued down and pull it to the opposite side of the tank to use for his burrow.
Grrrrrr. It wouldn't be so bad if I could find the Auroroa goby that was his tank mate before the move but I haven't seen a single sign of it in over a week.
