Topic: No more x10s!! Posted: November 04 2007 at 10:26pm |

I finally broke down and bought a DC8 today. My X10s failed to turn on my fans today and my tank got to 85degrees. This is with the X10 in the same power strip as the X10 transmitter. I know I've had problems when they were a few feet away, but in the same powerstrip?? I might actually have my MHs controlled by my AQII. Why do X10s get so much interference?

I don't know about the X-10 an interference but I do know the DC-8 is the way to go! I have never had a problem with mine.

Thats good to hear you've had no problems Mike.
Is anyone here an expert or knowledgable on x10s?

Has anyone used Insteon for reef control? I know it's better than X10, but I don't know if it solves any of the reef specific problems.
X10 distributes command signals over your existing powerlines. INSTEON
takes this a step further: This dual-mesh network combines wireless
radio frequency (RF) with your home's existing electrical wiring for
maximum reliability, and since it's compatible with your legacy X10
products, you won't need to replace all of your existing switches and
modules until you're ready. |
I was thinking of getting 3 Insteon relays (for actinic, daylight, and moonlights) and a PowerLinc serial controller so that I can time all my lights (currently on lamp timers) It would be about $100 for the 3 relays and $60 for the PowerLinc, but I would be able to control other lighting in my house that is on Insteon. I would consider going the Neptune Systems route if it wasn't too much money. How much does an AC Jr. and DC4 cost?

I've used and installed X10 and Insteon relays and switches in the past. Do you have any specific questions?

Cody, I've used X10's for my security system and I have found that they are not reliable if you don't have them plugged directly into a house plug since the messaging system is relayed through the house wiring. I always wondered how it worked with a tank setup because of the powerstrip issue. It seems like it would kind of be a hit and miss thing.
With that said, do you want to sell your X10 stuff for a good price?

In todays world of hi-tech there are numerous frequency spectrums out there and your house wiring acts like a big antenna picking up all kinds of signals. It is not a suprise that transmitters that utilize house wiring have issues from time to time. The internal wiring of a power strip is just one continuous buss so you must have lots of electrical noise in your home or poor x10's for them to fail wired almost directly to the transmitter. A controller is the way to go for most of us. I know they are expensive however you did not choose a cheap hobby either . Good luck!

Hehe I'm sure it doesn't help living in an apartment complex either.
Amie - I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my X10s, but you'll be the first to know if I decide to sell them.
