Hey all,
I hope its not going to be an ongoing issue but i woke today to find my cleaning crew tearing apart one of my blue green chromis, this one had always been a bit slower than the other three (yea, i could tell, cuz the slower one isnt slow, its dead). After about half an hour, i had a dead peppermint shrimp. I saw it was living just before so i didnt see anything wrong then it just killed over. I noticed the chromis hiding a little bit before the lights went out last night which i thought was unusual but not alarming, guess i was wrong. Nothing else looked ill or was dying so i'm not sure what the cause was. I did some tests on the water before a change and i had: nitrate: 0 (confirmed with api reef master and strips), nitrite: 0, phosphates: 1, ph: 8 (seems to always hover around there no matter what i do, possibly the strips), salinity 1.024, KH: 10, Calcium 440, GH 180+ (have only test strips so far for this), and temp: 78F. I did a 25% water change after testing just to make sure i could get some bad stuff out that may have been in there. Any ideas???

How long have you had the Chromis and the Peppermint? Chromis are a great starter fish... some die quickly and some just won't die. Possible problems with the acclimation of the Peppermint? They are very sensitive to different SW and changes in salinity.

As far as the peppermint shrimp.  Are you sure that it did not just molt?  It can look real close to the real thing, so if you removed it and it was more than a shell it indeed died.  The chromis could be from any number for causes and dlindquist is right from my experience.  The other thing may be that the one chromis did not get accepted into the 'group' by the others and was harassed as I have heard they are great as solitary fish, but can be a challenge to keep in a school.

Yea, the peppermint was definately dead. I've seen several moltings from my cleaner so it was easy to know. I kind of figured they can just die sometimes. I was also told by the LFS that i'd lose one or two anyway. Still.. suprising they both died within hours. I had the shrimp in there for over a month and the chromis a few weeks.

you said you tested with test strips right? they are not the most accurate. how was your KH measured? you said 10 but 10 what? ppm? dkh? eq/l? your alk may be low. but that shouldnt kill them unless it was sudden. did you check the temp?

I didnt use test strips for the KH. it was 10 dkh. temp was 78 and rarely goes anywhere but there.
