Have you checked your pumps to make sure one is not blocked? If you took the old heater out and it was still heating up it's got to be something other than the heater. However, if it was the heater i would fill zip lock bags with ice to get it cooled down first.

What's the temp of the water? I don't think that a heater could heat the water enough to bubble (boil), but it can heat it enough to kill everything. I'd work on getting the temp down to a reasonable area. I'd also remove all the dead fish, do another water change, and put some new carbon in ASAP!
None at the moment

This sounds stupid and simple but if your biocube has the manufactured lid on it make sure to keep that open as well so it lets the heat out. I wasn't sure if you would think about that in a panic Embarrassed.
Hope it gets back down to normal soon and nothing else dies. Are you able to raise your PH and get the nitrates down?

Sounds like the microswitch got stuck in the on position, or that the housing cracked and was electrifying the water (or both). I had that happen with a Hydor Theo, the switch stuck on, the housing shattered and I came downstairs to a buzzing noise. When I opened the stand the heater was buzzing and the water was bubbling around the heater from the electricity coming off of it. You already replaced the heater, but what is your actual water temp? Before you raise your pH what is your alk? Usually pH will only lower if your alk is already low.

The Stealth heater cracked and spewed chemicals into the water. This was also the reason for the boiling water when he removed it from the tank.
In the last month or so, two separate threads come up on this MB telling that those Stealth heaters were recalled by the mfr. for exactly this reason.
This time of year a heater isn't even necessary, something that has been discussed here a lot.Smile

I would be happy to frag what I can to get you started again. As far as the Stealth heaters... when the discussion did come up, I pulled both my heaters out (which I found was also the cause of the stray voltage in my tank). While the manufacture had pulled the heaters from the market, they had  not recalled any heaters at that time and would do nothing about the potential problem. Guess they were waiting for bigger problems which might very well result in law suites. Fortunately I was able to return them to Pet Smart. No questions asked.
I am still using my heaters (and do throughout the year) as my home is around 60 degrees and my tank around 76 degrees.

Yea if I don't use my heaters at night my tank dips way too low.
Good luck on getting things going again, it really sucks to see so much die:( So sorry to hear.
