I tried it on my current sump and it seems the sylicone let go of the glass and the "walls" came falling down. I have a small wall that remains. I want to build a new sump setup and have a glass tank to start with. How can this work?
I will just give my warning that your system will flood, bulbs will burn out, and things will take continuous maintenance... get over it.

I don't have that much glass. I have cut some glass though. I am thinking about it.

i put glass baffels in my 50g sump/refugium it worked really well ... i just made acrylic teeth that slip over the top of the baffels, where i wanted teeth.

what size do you need i have some extra glass . I never did get around to making a nano out of these.

sky working with acrylic is easy enough.  How long did you let it dry?  I would wait at a bare minimum of 24+hours also when siliconing you need to silicone the supporting side.  the weight of the water will push the acrylic out to one side that is the side you need to concentrate on.  also cutting the acrylic just a little to big and bending it into a slight U shape more like a ) (just like a Da**).  That will increase its holding strength.  caution only use flexible acrylic for the U or it will crack your glass.

I used acrylic in my glass sump and I have not had any problems. I used a lot of silicone and I made sure the surfaces were very clean. I also cut the acrylic so that it is very tight. Careful not to bow the glass or you could crack it.

I actually cut my acrylic weirs a tad short, but just gooped it up with a good silicone. I had to tape them in place until the silicone set. Just make sure that the glass is clean, that you are using a good silicone and that you let it set for 24-48 hours. You should no problems.

I've used acrylic in glass tanks many times..... I always used superglue gel.

I usually cut just a hair short or right flush. I also let it sit for a long time 24-48. I have resealed tanks without problem. It just seems the sylicone lets go of the glass. I am going to try glass. I have old lids and junk around...

Skye -
If you're having problems with the silicone failing, how will a different parent material make a difference? Is the silicone seal failing on the glass side or the acrylic side of the seal? I used acetone then white vinegar to clean the surfaces before I siliconed everything in place. I havn't had any problems - going on five years. Good luck.

Why use baffles? Why not use a structure of smaller or flater pieces of LBTR to hold back the algae and a place for more biological filtration and use a plastic food storage container (cut up if necessary) to hold back the sand from the pump inlet. Sorry, but I see too many sump/Refugia that are more complicated than they need to be.

agreed, but it's kinda nice to have the deviders. I don't really clean the glass. Maybe thats my problem. I use 100% pure sylicone GE style. I think it will bond better to the glass. I can't really remember what side it fails on. It seems the glass side. should i scratch up the glass?

well after figuring out I don't really know how to either cut or BALLANCE ( 2 pieces) of glass. I turned to the table saw with my scrap acrylic. I wanted teeth in the top anyways. I tryed putting pressure between the peices this time. PLenty between the glass and acrylic. Then did every seam with plenty. HTH. I have about a 6inch square that is where the water will downflow. Hope this won't give out. Makes my dreams of building a costom glass tank a pipe dream. Some things are better left to the pro's.......

Me neither.  I have made dozens of sump this way and have never had a failure.

I would recommend making sure the glass and acrylic are very clean (use rubbing alcohol on the glass).  Make sure you make a good clean seal between the glass and acrylic.
