Topic: Where to buy GFO? Cache Valley Posted: January 27 2011 at 2:34pm |
I'm pretty sure it's time for me to start running GFO. Where's the best place to get it? I've been shopping BRS - is that as good as I'm going to do anywhere?
Anyone in the area want to combine on the order? Increased qty decreases the price a lot.

I would go in with you, but I need to wait until after the 15th of next month to have the money.

Did you want all 4 lbs or were you thinking to split it? Don't recall how much the next size up is...

The next size up, if I recall is a 5 gallon bucket. The price per pound is about the same as the 4lb size. So if you buy 3, 4lb size, it will be cheaper and if we can get 5 it will be even a little less. Also 5 would get free shippping! I'm not in a rush to place an order anymore, but it would be cool to get the discount. Lets get an order together.

I can share a 4lb bucket here (Roy, David Willis), so count me in. Anyone else?

I was thinking about getting the High capacity stuff because supposedly it has less dust, and lasts longer....

OK - the nicer stuff requires half as much, so it's really not any more expensive. Can we get enough people to commit to the 7, 1/2 lb portions @ about $15 each?
Does anyone need other stuff from BRS so we can get to the free shipping @ $175? I've already hit that twice myself in the last 6 weeks.

I don't understand the increasing concern about PO4? Only periodically do I use a chemical media to remove Phosphate and when I do, the less expensive Activated Alumina works just fine for me. Please help me understand.

I'm running a sumpless system with a goodly amount of livestock. Yesterday I tested and my PO4 was .5 (iirc) as well as my nitrates being about 20. (I should have written the numbers down, Alk = 10, Ca 390, Mag 1320) Anyway, with the absence of a skimmer (and no possibility to add one), I am wanting to utilize what I do have available to me to keep water quality up.
I did a 15% water change yesterday (the first time using RO/DI water) to help.
I have a deep sand bed and lots of LR. I have recently added an in-tank refugium with Chaeto and Agar. I have high flow (IMO) and am running AC. I keep a goodly amount of soft corals. My CuC is pretty healthy, IMO, too.
What other "helps" would you suggest?

I have cyano growing, and the only nutrient I measure is phosphate.... I started a thread on it, so if you have better ideas I am open to them.

I'm holding off on spending money right now - want to see if the chaeto/agar will take care of my parameters. If I have issues, then GFO is on the horizon.
