Topic: black/brown stuff on corals Posted: July 24 2014 at 10:08am |
I have a couple of corals that are suddenly struggling and they have a "black" or brownish red on them and it seems to be killing/hurting them. My wife just took a pic and it is hard to see but it is a duncan that was doing awesome and putting on heads and now has that on it and has shrunk. I am doing a iodine dip of several of my fungias to make sure they don't have a fungus. Any ideas what it might be? I wish I could get a better pic!!

I believe Darren is right. Ross Bagshaw just lost a Trachophyllia and I almost lost a German Blue Montipora Digitata to what sounds like the same problem Cyanobacteria. Unfortunately, it didn't work to stir the sand to disturb the Cyano and let good bacteria take over. Both our systems have plenty of good growing Macroalgae, so the problem was not just excess nutrients. The remedy seems to be Chemiclean, followed by a dose of a bottled bacteria product like Dr. Tims or Microbacter 7, etc. I am starting to appreciate these products more and more. I used prodibio bioclean for a month and i have not had cyano since and I had it pretty bad, its simply a bacteria and a food source which in theory builds a bacteria population that out competes the cyano - I was skeptical it would work but it did for me. I did stop dosing it after they cyano was gone and it has not returned and it has been 4 months. It was recommended by Nikki. here is a drama filled thread on it http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=69890&title=algae-on-sand-never-ending
