Topic: fans Posted: June 15 2003 at 11:40am |
For all those with experance. I need 2 fans that are queit! The tank is in the living room and the fan thats on it right now is very loud. The fans are for a 125 gallon tank with 2 125 mh and 2 5 foot vho's.
Are there some inexpensive alternitives? If I have to spend the money I will but I would rather spend on other things like corals.

I have not used them, but you should check out the computer fans. They are cheap but I have no idea how loud they are. What about putting a desk fan under the tank onto your sump?

I am very fond of my Orion fans, whisper quiet and <$20.00. Plus they are in stock locally.

computer fans will work but after some time dust will bind up the bearings in the fan causing them to fail and seem to also be kinda loud when you put the power to them to get them to push the air you need

I have one computer fan in my hood... it's loud. Maybe check out RTaylor's fans (I think sean has them in his hood too). $20 isn't bad and they operate on 120 v AC.

The fans that RT has in his system is what I have in mine too. Bruce, when you were here, did you hear them? They are pretty quiet.

Marcus, Does it work just as well to run a fan underneath at the sump? I would think it work better to run the fans over the lights which are the source of the heat but I have not had much experance with this. If running a fan over the sump is a good way to cool the tank then this may be a better option for me

I have an extra 2" cpu fan that you can have. Not big, but the little bugger pushes some air. It isn't all that loud either. Maybe you could throw a frag my way for it. Either way it is yours if you want it.

Piston-
I have four 4" fans, I will trade them for work . And I promise not to sell them to someone else, even after you say you want them.

I got some computer fans for my canopy, and they're quieter than the desk fan I have been running, which wasn't too loud for me (though I would imagine it could be for someone else).
Putting a fan over your sump or in your canopy also depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Some ballasts and bulbs (like mine) have a maximum operating temperature and need fans to keep them within range. The fan for my canopy also keeps my tank under 80 degrees.
I got a micro power supply for the fans too, which I'll be able to use for some cold cathode moon lights some day.

I think that I fan under the tank on the sump will work to keep your tank under eighty degrees. But your stand needs to get fresh air somehow or else it won't be as effective.
