Topic: New to skimmers Posted: July 17 2012 at 9:51pm |
All right so i have read abut skimmers and i cant keep going without one - so i got one! This one was the only one big (bigger one anyways) that they had at my new petco, so i got it. It came with an air pump, air line tubing, air valve, check valve, air stone, colloection cup with lid, and the body aka chamber. i put it all togather, and thats all the directions say to do. The brand is just bio cube... somwthing something... and it hangs on the wall on the inside of the tank, with like a protector around it, but its about under a foot tall or long. So i put it all togather, but it didnt come with any other directions, and i estimated to set my air valve to make it so the foam is just over the chamber almost in the collection cup. So my questions - -how high do i need my foam to go up to?? -how long would it usualy take to get the green slime crap in it?? -How does the green slime collect?? -How can i get it to do its best performance?? Sorry anout the long post and honestly i am really not this dumb but this didnt come with a whole ot of instructions and its my first one.. Thanks!! Tanner

Well I'm not the one to answer your question. I got frustrated with a different brand skimmer and still haven't got it to working .. but I looked on the internet and the instruction manual for your skimmer is online. Here is the link:
I hope this helps :)

That does help! Thank you lots, thats the exact same one too. Now my other question, how long does it take to get the skim mate to fill up?? Some people said half an hour but some said a couple weeks.....

Well hopefully you will get some good advice from some experience skimmer users. I was told that if your tank is new (which mine is) that it can take awhile as in weeks. But I never got any bubbles and read a bunch of complaints about the brand I bought on the internet (many seemed to be defective), so I need to probably pack mine up and call the manufacturer and return it.

More air through the stone.
Side- note: The airlift skimmer method is efficient on electricity but not so much for skimming. You can get a good needlewheel skimmer like the Hydor Slim Skim for not much money, and it will out perform the oceanic in every way possible.

So today i took off the clear tube that is half way up in the camber so now thats in the chamber is the air stone. I did this so i could turn up the air valve all the way to include as much bubbles as possible, but on full blast with out the tube, there is defeinitaly alot more bubbles, but now they dont reach all the way to the top............ So i used my own air pump i got from walmart a while back the it is A LOT stronger. I acutaly had to turn down the air just a bit cause there was to much. Now there is alot more air being forced alot faster all around and its sucking water in faster and stronger than it was............ Yes this is odd, but i smelled the top of the tank water (not touching it!) and it didnt smell like much, but then i smelled in the skimmer and it smelled really strong , so i hope that means there is stuff collecting ...

What size tank is this biocube skimmer on?
I have one I won at the MWRF on a 8 gallon nano, and I think it does superb on that size of a tank. The only way more water can "flow" thru it is with more water movement around it. Mine I have to empty 1-2 a week since it gets full that quick. And the foam it produces was pretty amazing to me.
Now if I had any bigger then say a 12-14gallon I think I would go a differnt route with a skimmer. But that's just me

Yea, definitaly. It pisses me off sooooooo bad because our petco sales a bunch of salt water fishes and huge tanks, but only tiny skimmers.. i only got it because it was the only one that was kinda big.... all the other ones were a tiny simple set up..... i have alot of water movement around it though:) and sadly its on a 55 gal. on the box it says 10 through 40 gallons though. They had a bunch of different sized skimmers by oceanic for biocubes there. most of which were under 30 gallons. I will absolutly get a bigger one though soon, no matter what.

Sounds to me you don't have a sump? If you don't I would look into either the tunze 9002 skimmer, its a little small for the tank but an excellent skimmer and I believe it can be ordered with magnets to hold it in place against the back or side of your tank at the desired level. Or there is the red sea hob prizm skimmer, not the best but does the job if set correctly

Tanner, if you have a sump i have a skimmer i am getting rid of... Works like a charm... :) 20$ But yeah depending on how big your tank is that biocube skimmer might not be suffice, although it is better than nothing...
