How many shrimp can I fit into my tank?  I have no fish, and therefore not much for people to look at when they come in the office.  What varieties will live harmoniously together, and what should I stay away from?  I would like to have maybe 6 or so, but it may be too many.  See tank descr below.

Thanks,

Why are there no fish in the tank? If it's not a "cycle" issue, you could try fire shrimp. Since many varieties of shrimp are pretty cryptic and hide out a lot, try to find shrimp that don't mind being the center of attention. Sexy shrimp usually hang out in full view, while shaking their rumps.

My cleaner shrimp is out all the time wanting food. Right after my purple tang he's the one that eats the most. And my fire shrimp hides, I can find him, but I have to search.
I think its more the personality of the shrimp, how long you've had him, more than the actual species of shrimp that dictates if they'll be more friendly.
Along with that same note, I have a peppermint shrimp in a ten gallon tank at work, that is always out in plain view. He's the biggest peppermint shrimp I've seen anywhere. And I got him because he was the smallest out of the bunch.
So thats my thought on it.

Gotta have the cleaner shrimps.  and if I go get rock I'll grab you a piece.  Let me know how big. I can imagine how big it should be, but you know.

Can I keep a few fire shrimp at a time?  The cleaner shrimp have no fish to clean, but I wouldn't mind having a variety of shrimp in there (a couple fire, a cleaner or 2, and a peppermint).

Fax - from my experience shrimp are quite elusive and shy.  I've never had them be out in the open a ton, but just my experience.  Especially peppermints.

Why? Do have some shrimp that need work? This is the Crustacean Nation you know. Let me know if you have any pods with nice bods.

By-the-way, I notice every time I add a cleaner shrimp to the tank, my peppermints tend to disappear.

My CS disappeared and the PS's remained! (always in hiding until feeding time.)

Why is Fax staying away from fish?

Never had good luck with fish.  They always die and stuff, probably because you have to feed them all the time.  I feed the corals and softies much less, and add much less junk to my small water volume.

I had a coral banded once (until he made his way into the overflow ).  He was out quite a bit, but I have heard they are agressive towards other shrimp.

Yes CBS/BCS are agressive, but I'll bet $100 that you can keep fish better now than before. You have the resources of this group to help you pick the best fish for your particular tank.

I have had Coral Banded shimp in two tanks with Peppermint shrimp and never had a problem with them.  My understanding is that Coral Banded Shrimp will not get along with each other.  Apparently they like to pull each others arms off.

I am certainly open for suggestions for fish.  I am not the best feeder so scavengers would probably be best.

I was home sick today so I got a lot done for the tank .  Slides are done, fuge is set up and plumbed (no leaks), and I just have to silicone the Kalk tower.

It would be easy to say that damsels are the hardiest, but keeping fish isn't just about hardiness, it's also about picking what you like and then deciding what kind of environment to provide.

And, since the tank is still in the building stage, could you start by telling us what you've had that died or which ones have done the best for you. A little history if you don't mind.

This tank has been set up for almost 5 years.  It is just going through a big upgrade right now.  I have lost most recently 2 false perculas, a lawnmower blenny, I'm sure there have been others, but i just don't remember (I try not to get too attached).  My CBS did pretty well, until his untimely meeting with the overflow.

The things that have done really well are the polyps, mushrooms, colt, and some LPS.  Never really tried SPS until recently, I will se how they do in a few months.  My coraline has always been great on my rocks, and on the back wall.

I have never tested any water parameters.  I have only used 2 part calcium additives and 5 gallon water changes about once per month.

I have always had some kind of an algal problem although the species changes from time to time.  I have never had a big hair algae outbreak, but the red slime has been a problem many times.  I suspect that this is mainly due to not using RO/DI water.  I have just used carbon filtered tap water, but that is going to change with this latest round of changes.
