When I started out in this wonderful adventure I was overwhelmed with choices and didn't put much thought into salt brand, but I need more now and I know there must be some differences. So who uses which salt, and why?? Thanks in advance for the feedback :)

I second that. D-D H2Ocean, I won't use any other brand anymore. It is a little pricey but well worth it.

How much is it for the large bucket locally? It's $65 at Marinedepot.com and only $8.99 shipping for the 23.3 kg size.

What size is your tank Connie? That's what I have gone to doing with my small tank. I do a weekly water change on the same day and don't bother to check my params anymore as they are staying. I would like to do this with the new tank I am setting up as well once I have it established.

Right Now Dr Foster Smith has free shipping for orders over $49.  I've used oceanic, but I'm thinking to switch to Coral Pro Salt by Red Sea due to the ALK params out of the salt..

Brad I could agree more and I got the idea of a weekly change from you.....

My tank is a 180 with a 90 gallon sump that is about half full so I do a 20 gallon per week and its worked like a charm....

I'll chime in.  I have used oceanic, reef crystals, H2ocean, and currently red sea coral pro.  My favorite has been the red sea coral pro, I just ordered a new bucket from Dr foster and smith with free shipping.  Mixes up nice and Parameters have been stable

I too love Oceanic. However, I have had a slight issue with lower PH since switching over about 1 year ago. Now that I mix equally with Instant Ocean, everything tests out great. Regular water changes keeps things in check. Like Brad said, if it isn't broken.....

I use Oceanic most of the time too but it doesn't keep my mag up where it needs to be. I change about 5 gallons of my 32g tank and my mag falls to 900 by Sunday.

ESV Seawater System is my favorite salt to use. I used D&D H2Ocean for a long time and liked it a lot but got sick of the price. Especially when you only get about 140 gallons out of a bucket.

K, now I'm totally confused, can't everyone just agree on one thing! LOL Guess I am going to have to do some more research...that usually works out best in the end anyway, right :) Thanks again for all the opinions

I feel I should be using the best, like is it really worth saving $10-15 on 3 months worth of salt? But, I'm reading that many people encounter negative side effects when switching brands; so as many have commented "if it isn't broke..." Which leads me to my next questions: Are the premium salts lots better, is it worth switching? And if I decide to switch, should I do it now while my tanks are still fairly young, or wait until they are mature before potentially shocking them? Thanks again, Dustin

This subject is always a big debate.  There is Not a correct or perfect salt out there that everyone will agree on.  I stick with the same brand because I know exactly what I need to add for my tank.  So I stick with it.
I'm sure you could try other brands and thenn decide what you like. Most salts are all good and have their own pros and cons.
