Hey Mountain Corals used to have a page on how to make our own Velvet Green & Rotifers.  Does anyone have a good recipe and experience.

Thanks

Kirk

I'm doing it right now and am pretty much duplicating what this reefer did.  http://www.sjwilson.net/reef/  It is a very easy and clean setup!

I think this would be a good class to give if we do a DIY workshop.  Is that something you (rfoote) would be interested in doing?

Sure - I by no means am an expert though!  It really isn't hard and once you get it going it isn't horribly time consuming.

Thanks.  Now the question is, "When will the DIY meeting be?"

I don't really have time to get everything together by tonight.  I could print some stuff off real quick and bring that.

I looked at the link you referred to. What a great site.  That really gives most of the info.

Ok, Kirk got me excited to start a culture. I ordered some fertilizer from the florida site, but I couldn't wait to get started. I got a bottle of green fron the LPS, got the set up going w/o the fertilizer. Has anybody heard about using miracle grow? Some one mentioned that to me......How much would I use? Anybody tried it? I've heard about it - but only drawbacks from what I understand are not really knowing the concentration of phosphates and nitrates in the Miracle Grow.  Just from what I remember.  Anybody else?  I'll do a search on Reefcentral.com - I'm sure that's where I saw it.

Suzy I have the fertilizer, I'm on a trip but I'll be back friday night. You only need a tsp. per gallon. I happy to share.

Hi, Guys! This is so cool! Our cyanobacteria is completely replaced with hair algae, thanks to our wonderful culture of green stuff in the basement! Does anyone have some spare rotifers to start our culture? And ,in case anyone is wondering, even though Kent says its product is nanno something phytoplanton, it doesn't grow. You get some floaties....Must have some sort of preservative or something....

Suzy - Sorry I know old post, but are you saying you think your phyto is causing your hair algae? Just wondering.

No, I don't think so. I think the phyto must eat what nuisance algaes eat, 'cause since we've been using it , all the cyano.hairy and slimey stuff is so gone! I gotta feed our hermits!
