Topic: LED Build for 180 Posted: July 27 2012 at 3:06pm |
Hey all looking at getting my LED's built here in the next month, wanted to see what everyone thought here is the equipment I am going to buy from Rapid LED
3 x 48 Ultra premium kit dimmable 6 5x22 heatsink 6 x 92mm Fans 2 x 12V AC adapter 24 LED UV Kit
I am going to use Nutreral white, Cool white, blue and royal blue with a couple UV per heat sink for colors for sure, but wanted to know what everyone though about adding red and greens? I will have 144 bulb to play with, and what lens do you think I will need for a 2 foot tank. There will be 2 rows of 12 on each heat sink with uv and moon beams in the middle of the sink. Thoughts welcome!
Thanks!

You might check this out. This is what I was thinking of doing over my 220 but got a realy good deal on some AI sol blues,
I did talk to him and he will let you mix and match colors. So you can add red, green and UV. From the people that I talked to that have used his system they really have liked it. If you are going to go with SpS tank I would look at the double led deal.
One other thing with this kit you can space the leds just right for the braces that are over the tank.
Just an idea. Good luck

Ok, looked into it, it seems his LED's don't have any real data spec's and the generic ones he has show they are not nearly as efficient as the Cree's and they are defiantly Chinese, also he was telling me that UV bulbs actually retard coral growth, can anyone weigh in?

I think I am going to add 24 more lights, 12 red and 12 green. That will cover about 6% of the total out, thoughts if that would be enough to make an impact? I am going to have a couple of extra drivers anyway so makes sense to get a few more.. This will put my LED count to 196 though.. which I am ok with I don't have to run at full brightness, and will save some energy not having to run at full power..Also going to have Maybe 60 royal blue, 12 blue, 36 cool white and 36 neutral white and 24 Violet/UV's is the current thought..gotta get this nailed down will be ordering probably next friday unless I can't get this figured out..

I am definitely going with cree.. all I know is that halides even have uv protection on them. Think it may be bad to shoot a beam at them.

I have a rapid set up on my tank. Couldn't be happier. I did nuetral white, royal blue, cyan(green), and uv. The uv doesn't add any uv, just there for color. I also run mine off my apex.

What ratio of colors are you using and what drivers are you using and how are you driving like for instance what colors are you seperating them by?

i have 3 drivers. i am running 20RB:12NW:4CY:4UV. driver #1 is 14RB, #2 is 12NW, #3 is 6RB 4CY 4UV. at the peak of the day i am running my whites @50%, blues @ 65% and my mixed at 75%. i have a lot of leds for my small tank, but everyone suggested i go a little heavier because of my odd shape. i have a good sized hammer that has lost a little color, so that is why i am running them so low right now.

i was trying for a ratio of 7RB:4NW:1CY:1UV. that was suggested as a nice 20k ish look. i had to change it up a little cause i spread my leds over 2 heatsinks

Awsome thanks for the info, so you don't think if you did it over again you would change anything? Add a bit of red or go with different whites?

might consider the red, haven't really looked into the effects of the red leds, visually or in color temp... but i really like the neutral whites.

My order has been made, in the ratio's I listed above, will power the whole thing with 3 HLG-185's and 3 ELN-60-48's with strings in parallel on 6 5.8"x22" heat sinks, about 32 bulbs per heatsink.

to clarify on the UV led and their usefullness/impact on the reef ill just repost a portion of what I posted on another thread. In the wild SPS corals produce some of their vibrant fluorescing pigments to ward off UV rays to protect them from burning. So to that point I have read of people having great success with UV LEDs for their SPS to generate fantastic coloring. But only using a very minimal amount I could not imagine more than 4 or 5 3 watt UV LEDs for your build. Now what is questionable about this is that SPS corals generate those colors to protect them selves mostly against UV-B where as the only UV that LED's are capable of emitting is UV-A so their is that to consider as well.

I am gonna plug 24 of them above a 180 so we shall see how they work out the ones from rapid hardly dip into the UV-A range so I am guessing there will not be too much effect due to true "UV"
