Topic: trachyphyllia dying? Posted: June 12 2013 at 8:30am |
I have had this trachyphyllia for 3 months. When I first got it it lost a small piece of flesh (Brown section) No other loss until now and the right side is slowly melting off the skeleton. The Left side still looks great and is inflating.
Water Parameters are all good.

pic is pretty small. What's the brown area? Was it by chance under sand for a while?

Aloha Erik, If you want our best help, we need to know what you know. Thanks for the pic. It tells me a lot. I need to know the numnbers for four water parameters: Alk Ca Mg I Have there been changes in any other of the LPS Also tell us about this tanks filtration and post a full tank shot(not the stand, just the tank and sump/Refugium) Thanks for that second pic, posted while i was writing. Because of the coral expelling its Zooxanthellae algae, I'm concerned that this may be compounded by a lighting issue. Mahalo, Mark 808-345-1049 call/text anytime

Erikts, you need to get with Reef'd Up today and see what she can do. Trachs are difficult to save but she is the best. She'll save it if anyone can.

I just tested and I dose 2 part manually and looks like my Mg is off a little. I am adding a dosing pump this week it just came. So I will get the Mg up then add the pump.
Is the trachyphyllia a goner?
ca 400 Alk 8.0 Mg 800

Get mag up, dip the trach in CoralRX (or something similar), and talk to Reefdup.

Aloha, No, it's not a goner. It's going to be fine. This is not an infection. I'm fairly certain of this. I have grown and sold coral for about 15 years. I've seen this condition many times before. Do not dip it in anything. This fading has been in progress for weeks. right It may need to be moved to a more favorable location in the tank or a different tank. Thanks for the tank pic. It's helpful, but I cannot see the coral in the FTS. If the coral is not in the shade of a rock overhang, I would move it further back out of direct light. Move other coral out of the way so there is room for it in the shade. I'm sorry, but the Mg is not just a little off, it's way off. Buy Some Tech M and bring that level up to 1300 over the next 2 days, 200 ppm per day. What coral is upstream from the Trach? In other words what coral is the water flowing past before it flows over the Trach There are a lot of different coral in the tank. Are you running AC at least one week/month Please explain the tanks filtration. How old is the tank How about the Iodine level Have your favorite LFS check the I level in the water, buy some Lugols or Tech I and do a half dosage now. Please feel free to call me if you want to discuss it quickly and not have to wait for the MB. Mahalo, Mark 808-345-1049 call/text anytime

Coral are very resilient, more than we give them credit. When things like water quality and light are out of sync, they suffer but can heal themselves when given help. Aloha, Mark

Hi Nikki,
If you don't mind sharing your thoughts here they might prove helpful to others reading the posts.
I'm not trying to start a battle over whose treatment is best but would be interested in your treatment suggestions.

Nikki documented the recovery process of her Trach's very well.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Pete. I have several other ones that were more recent (and looked even worse initially) that I still need to write about. So much to do...so little time.
