OK, I know that most of the experienced folks probably think that my tank is inadequate for most marine life. And I agree for the most part, I have a tank inferiorty complex. But hey, it's a start.

What I have is a 29-gallon Eclipse 3. I have the standard wet/dry filter in the hood and have upgraded the lighting with a 65K PC retro kit. I am not an expert, but I try to absorb as much as I can.  Currently, I have a about 30 lbs of LR, Yellow Tang, Domino Damsel, Diamond Goby, Fire Shrimp, Cleaner Shrimp, Awsome Xenia, shrooms, zoos, leather, open brain, other shtuff.

I have tried a couple anemones (never again) but they did not make it. I think that I was ill advised and had not upgraded my lighting yet. Anyways, trying to get some ideas of where I can go with this little tank. I want to go bigger, but think that I should finish the one I started. How much am I limited? Thanks for reading. When is the next meeting?

Carl,

I'll jump in and answer the next meeting part.... our next meetins is OCTOBER 2ND!!!! Coral Cutting Seminar!!!!!!

As for the tank.  29 gallons does not really limit you.  Trust me that is what i have and you will be amazed at what can fit in there.  Actually you will be amazed at what can fit in a 7 gal eclipse.  The real trick is lighting.  Can you please tell us more about your lighting.  For instance on my 29 gal I have 4 55watt bulbs, and two T-5s.  How many watts is that retro kit you put in there?

My only other comment is to see some tanks.  We some people in our club (JFinch, Mark Peterson, Sarnak) who have wonderful small aquariums.

Adam

Come to a meeting, they’re fun!

I think that the 29 gallon is too small for the tang. I would consider trading him in.
I agree with Adam that you can do awsome stuff with a tank that size. I have an awsome 10 gallon. I have also had a 3 gallon eclipse at work with success and a 5 gallon with success. How are your corals doing right now? What is it you are looking to put in there exactly? And dont have a complex about your tank size. I started with a 10 and had it over a year before I could get anything bigger. Plus some people just prefer smaller tanks.

Welcome to the group Carl. The coral propagation seminar next month will be awesome! $5 for coral frags!
I like small tanks. Adam kept my baby Tomato Anemonefish in his 7 gallon eclipse from the time it was 4 months old. Now it's about 4 years old. I hope it's doing okay in the 29.

But we don't know the size of the Tang.
I just got a quarter($$) sized Yellow Tang for my 10 gallon! Unfortunately it didn't survive the move to my brother's house so people could see it on the Reef Tour.
Don't get discouraged about anemone's. I have two in my 10 .... no... better say that my niece has two in her 10 gal.!
If you haven't seen it yet, it was the July Tank of the Month. It can be viewed and read about by clicking the blue button to the left of this message. Hope you take the opp to check out all the cool info and pics on the WMAS site.

Wow, thanks for the encouragement. I am glad that I am not the only one with a small one. Tank I mean, you know.  Sorry, I need the levity today. Anywhooo, I took a look around at the TOTM and WOW! I surely wish that my tank was that well stocked and beautiful. I know that I have the right start with the aquascape, but I am just stuck right now. Needing some new ideas and maybe a little direction. I think that what I need to do and will do is to get some pictures loaded up and maybe you all (or as we used to say in Carolina Ya'll) can throw some ideas my way.

As for the YT, he/she is happy as a clam (whatever that means). There is still plenty of room in the tanks and he/she has plenty of room to move around still. I do want a larger tank and it could be moved over if needed. Thanks for the input.

I've been spending time writing the WMAS Reefkeeping Guide and when Kahuna offered mangroves, I bot three. Going to see how they do in a semi sealed jug I found at the D.I. No circulation but wondering what invert or fish will do well in a stagnant pond. Any ideas?

Carl, this thread is a bit old but I thought I would chime in because I have the exact same Eclipse tank as you! I also retrofit in a PC 65w "smartlight" (one daylight and one actinic bulb) in mine. I didn't think that those were enough so I managed to sucessfully squeeze two T5's in there as well, one actinic and one daylight. I was wondering if member here thought that should be enough light for my 29 gal.

All my corals and everyone else seems to be fine but since I'm still new to this reassurance is great.

Carl, I'd love to see some pictures of your tank if you have them! You can find a webpage I put up about mine last night with lots of pictures at

Dave, Actually I will be taking my 29 down soon. I have gotten the bug to upgrade to bigger better faster more. So I am snatching up a 125 on saturday. .

The lighting is OK, but I got tired of having to squeeze things in. I need room to grow. All of my softies seem to do well with the 65w and even my trumpet seems to be thriving. But I am looking forward to burning the dual 250 MH's I think I am going to get. I am just downright giddy. Which is really strange, because I don't look the giddy type. I do have some pics that I can try and squeeze into this post though. I just have to find the time to shrink them.

Thanks!

We've all been there before haven't we... I've learned to use the following quote every time I come home from the fish store: "The Devil made me do it honey..."

Luckily, my wife and kids love the fish and corals almost as much as I do. So, the support is there and I don't need to justify the cost as much! I wonder if there are any Government subsidies available for the addiction.
