Disclaimer- All photos are cell phone pics.
Overall I am a frugal, impatient person, and I have a habit of overstocking my aquariums. Something that doesn't really mix well with saltwater but here goes.

So here we go folks, this adventure started a few months ago when I picked up an 8 Ga. JBJ Nano and decided it was a salt water tank so I better go out and find some saltwater critters.

Man o man what was I thinking look at that poor anemone.

A day later the anemone started to fill up and the poor thing could almost touch all 4 sides of the glass.

After monitoring the nitrates etc. I realized there was no way I was going to be able to keep the water healthy on this small system. I contacted the guy who sold me the clowns and anemone to see what he had left. He agreed to give me another 40# of LR, 40# of live sand, HOB Skimmer, and his remaining chemicals.

I spent the whole day setting up a 55 Ga.

In the photo above its a pretty simple setup. PC lights with a Cascade 700 Canister and a few powerheads. The biggest issue at this point is that i failed to rinse the live sand. Phosphates and nitrates are through the roof. I was so concerned with saving all of the life in the sand and thinking that the bacteria in the sand would help my tank cycle. Wake up Eric you aren't playing in freshwater anymore. Thanks to Badfinger at this time for testing my water and giving me some sound advice. Tank cycled in 1 week but phosphates took about 2 weeks to control. I lost 2 fish. One of my original clowns and a firefish I had to buy.

Over the next few weeks I continue to gather live rock and a few coral frags here and there. The best improvements I made were purchasing an LED light, HOB overflow from Rusty, and making a sump. Rusty was also kind enough to take the frag clippers to his tank and hook me up with some cool corals.

A little while after this I met Mark Peterson for the first time. He lives about 3 miles away and I topped by his place to pickup some macro-algae.

I think that once I figured out how to stabilize my phosphates and nitrates my addiction really began. I was buying frags to stuff in my tank every week. Mark stopped by and helped me with some additional lighting.

The tank is currently 3 months old and has about 50 coral pieces, 2 anemones, and 8 fish.

A few days ago I started looking at my tank thinking of ways I could redo the rock work. Man this really seemed like a big task considering I had so much stuff i would need to get out of the tank temporarily while I worked things over.
Here's the twist in the story. Did  I mention I had also setup a saltwater Fluval Edge 6 Ga. on my desk at work?

Yesterday I traded this small setup for a 90 Gallon setup.

Overall the tank is in great condition. I spent today cleaning the sand and water stains from the glass. I will get some cleaned up pics posted later.

The stand is a different story. It's only 24" tall, doesn't have a matching hood, and just overall not what I'm looking for.
I sent out a feeler ad last night, got a few replies but still nothing surfaced that really made me jump.
I met with my neighbor tonight who builds custom wood furniture. He agreed that if I purchased the wood supplies and a case of beer we could build and stain a new stand and hood on a Saturday. We have this tentatively scheduled for April 5th. In the mean time I am going to gather the wood supplies after he gets me a catalog to a wood mill that another friend works at. This thing is shaping up to cost me less than $200!

I still need to find some acrylic rods and epoxy for my rock work in the new setup.

I will post more as things unfold. I am always open to suggestions but dont take well to ridicule.Wink

I used acrylic rods on our first set up and it worked out great.

However, with our upgrade, I had something much different in mind for the rock work and knew the acrylic rods would not work. I ended up using Epo Putty.

DLind- is that a 4' or 6' tank? The first pic looks like a 4' and the second seems to be a 6'.
The rock looks great. I want to do something similar. One arch and two towers.

Things have been moving slower than expected. Started the stand last weekend. I hope to have it built and have the finish started on it this weekend.

Picked up a canopy and an Aqua Controller 3.
The canopy will be modified a bit to match the stand.
So far the controller sucks. I can't seem to connect it to the internet. It came with 4 probes and a DC8. Maybe I will just have to scratch the internet options and just use the DC8 functions.
some of the probes need to be calibrated, this unit might be a little too hi-tech for me.

Will try to get some photos posted of the stand this weekend.

The stand is almost done...

Here is a shot of the hood after getting modified and getting its 2nd finish coat...

Last night I cut out the old silicone and resealed it with a black silicone. I aslo painted the backside of the glass.
Today I stopped by to get some supplies from Rusty at Benepets after picking up some plumbing supplies from Lowes. After getting a few pointers from Rusty I came home and water tested the tank and adjusted all of the plumbing.

Well here it is ready to be moved onto the house...

Still need to add some doors but I figured I could gather the supplies for this, build and paint the doors outside and then just hang them and upgrade the hinges and handles later.
I really wan to make the move into the house tomorrow. I don't have enough saltwater to make it happen. I'm anxious to start the new aquascape.

Does anybody have any tips on dos and dont's for this move?
Here's a shot of the tank just before it gets torn down...

Thanks Matt. I notice you also live in Murray. I'm at approx 6100 S. 300 W.
I would start the move tomorrow but I don't have enough saltwater and I won't be able to pick any up until next weekend.
I figure I will be transferring about 60 gallons from the original setup but will need about 45 more gallons. If you have any containers to spare for a day I could always take all the containers to Benepets and buy premixed water the day of the move.

Well I ended up making the move on the 20th. Everything went well. It took me about 6 hours.
I went to Benepets and picked up 45 gallons of mixed saltwater.
When I got back home I started by bagging all of the corals I could. I set all of the rocks with attached livestock and fish in a 20 gallon container with a heater and an hob skimmer to help with oxygenation.

Once everything was removed I dropped the water down to just above the sand line. I stirred the hell out of the sand and syphoned the junk water out into the yard. I then moved all of the sand to one side of the tank and raised that side of the tank up and ran some of the old water over it to create a sort of a washing line. I scooped out the sand and removed the old tank and stand.

After moving the new stand and tank in I placed the old sandbed in and set a cookie sheet on top of it to try and keep the sand bed settled while I added the water.
I used about 40 gallons of the old water and approx 40 gallons of the new. The cookie sheet did it's job. The water did not get cloudy one bit. Once the water was about half way I added the heater to get the water up to 77* , then I started to add the rock back in. I settled with a scape that looked decent. I didn't want to spend too much more time with the fish and corals out of the tank. I added the remaining water and and started to float all of the bagged corals. It took about an hour for the water Temps to match and I began adding the fish. After the fish were in I got the sump back online and began placing the corals.

It's been 3 days and everything seems to have adjusted well. I have been monitoring the perameters daily and nothing seems out of the ordinary.
Salinity 1.025
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
Phos (somewhere between 0-0.2
PH 8.2
DKH 9
Cal. 440
Mag. 1260

In retrospect I wish I would have documented with more photos. The new setup could probably use an additional 10 lbs of live rock.

Yesterday my long tentacle anemone split. It looks like it may split again. One half wanted to stay up on the top of the rock and the other half wanted to drop down and lay on top of a bed of nuclear holocaust palys. I guess the anemone like having the extra room and took advantage of it.

I will get some more photos onto my laptop soon and share the new setup with you all. I'm open to any ideas and suggestions.
