I have two drains in the new 90g.  They are both 1" bulkheads.  I would like to know if it will be possible to get them to work evenly, or if I should make 1 the main drain, and make 1 an emergency drain if the water level gets too high.  If the primary one gets plugged I would just have an open stand pipe for the second just below the top of the tank that could prevent an overflow.

Will the primary durso be able to handle the 1000-1200gph from the return pump?

Thanks,

One 1" Durso will not handle that much flow and still work properly to avoid flooding in a power outage. I'd use both with proper screening to prevent snail shells from clogging them.

Is the Durso inside an overflow? If so, you might consider removing both and filling the overflow with bioballs to prevent clogging and quiet the waterfall.

On the modified durso's that I made, an expanded diameter at the top was simple to do with a reducing coupler. It allowed the durso to drop more water. The modified durso can be seen in the pics below. I believe this one went from 1" bulkhead to 1.5". The increased circumference makes a wider spillway. Dion/Holdencraft33 may still be using the one I made for the 120 gal Stingray tank. It expands to 2" diameter.

Mark's right - a plugged SINGLE durso is what caused our flood and electrical fire.

If I run them both as dursos can I get them to run evenly?  Will one do most of the work while the other does little or siphons completely?

Seems like I remember Jon saying that he had 1800gph running through a 1" durso somewhere.

I would just do one durso, go with less flow through it and use the other in a closed loop.  You really don't need that much flow into your sump, especially if you are running a closed loop to get a lot of flow in your main tank.

Closed loop is out, Instead I'm using 3 hydor Kaoralia 3's for 2400ish gph.  Way less power and fewer holes in the tank.

Redundancy is a good thing.  Prevention is definitely better, IMHO.

I have two dursos on my 125 gallon tank and they work together without any problems.

And I've seen a single 1" durso handle the unrestricted output from a Mag18.

Use both overflows.  Murphy says that one will eventually plug off on you!

I'd use both as drains with a durso on each.  Do you have one overflow box or two?

*EDIT*  My comments about needing to have dursos in seperate overflows be at the same height were wrong.  The water level in the tank is set by the level of the lowest overflow box, not the durso inside the overflow.  Sorry for the bad info.

*This is still true* If both drain holes are in the same overflow box, making a "double-durso" isn't very difficult if you have room inside the overflow box.  I have 1200 gph going through a double-durso like the drawing below.  Each pipe takes 1/2 of the water and it's just as quiet as two single dursos.

Why would height be an issue. (unless the durso's are in the same overflow box) The overflow boxes will take the water as it comes in and the durso's will drain as it comes in. Even if one is 2" lower than the other. I have 2 -1400gph pumps returning on my 125 with 2 durso overflows and it keeps up just fine.

They are in the same overflow box, and there is likely room for the Double-D (D squared, as I like to call it).  Add bulkhead screens to that image and it would be perfect.  I can see where that would level out the flow between the two.
