Topic: Tank for school Posted: December 17 2007 at 5:29pm |
Hello all,
My name is Jesse and I am working at an elementary school while I finish up my degree. The elementary school is a Title One school with a great bunch of kids that do not have all the luxuries in life.
I'm new to salt water but it has totally revived an ambition of mine that started when I was a kid. Long story short, I wanted to be a marine biologist after visiting San Diego when I was eight years old.
I think it would be fantastic if I could set up a tank for these kids to enjoy and be inspired by. I don't have all the means myself but I am going to do what I can. I could use some help if anyone has any spare equipment they would like to donate.
Even as simple as watching life grow on one piece of live rock could be a worthwhile experience for these students.
Thank you,
Jesse Whitaker

Obviously it would be way cooler to setup a whole reef tank with inverts and fish. But... have you thought about growing some pods or even brine shrimp? If you did pods you could look at them and some phyto under a microscope and all that fun stuff! Just a suggestion If you do end up being able to get a reef tank set up, I'd be happy to donate some xenia or some LBTR.

I was thinking 20 gallon, maybe 40-60 but it has to be moved every summer so not too big. I would like to add a small refugium, maybe a rubbermaid. I might give it to one classroom/teacher/grade to take care of as a class or grade, but my true hope is that it will be something that all the school can enjoy.

I think I have a 20 gal, I'll check. If I do, you can have it. I also have sand and a powerhead and heater and things like that for you.

I've got a nice 40 extra tall. It does have a broken center support, but never had a problem with it. Would make a nice display tank. You're welcome to it if you like.

Wow! That is great! Thanks. I will check with the faculty tomorrow and see what we want to take on.
It will be great to have some salt water in the school.

Thank you Adam and Ed,
I'll take the 20 gallon if you have it. It would be great if you have a heater, powerhead, and sand also. I'll buy a small Rubbermaid and a U-tube to make a refugium. Building a stand, buying live rock, a light and a bucket would complete one system for a 4th grade class. I'll use my salt, additives and testing kit.
If a 20 gallon is not available I would make use of the 40 in its place for this room. I might have a different teacher interested in the 40 gallon. So most likely I can make use of the 40 gallon also. It would be a good one to have a deep sand bed in.
I found out today that the school doesn't have microscopes and yet microorganisms are part of the sixth grade curriculum. Still, I'm excited; a salt water tank can be used for many different science projects and learning activities, as well as just getting students interested. So thanks again! This is really appreciated.

That would be great if I could use it to the side. I have no way of making an overflow so I was thinking of just a siphon over the side.

I think it would be cool if you could take the kids on a field trip out by Tooele and get the sand and the LBTR to start this tank. that might slow things down, but if in class reasearch is done to find out why just any sand or rock won't work. that would also be a great lesson. also let the kids do the reasearch into what livestock would work together vs eat each other.
just an idea.

I've started the tank.
I bought some dead rock from Dale and I'm trying to bring it back to life. So far I have this rock in a bucket with some live rock I had and some free rock from Biznitch. It has a heater and air to help it back to life.
Adam Blundell has graciously offered a tank, heater, powerhead and sand. With this I will be able to get something going soon. I'll keep updating this post with my progress.

I have everything to set up a 20 gallon hob filter setup. I was thinking of running rock rubble in the filter instead of carbon. Bad idea? I have yet to make a stand but hope to do it this weekend. This is my drawing.
So far I have a 20 gallon tank, a powerhead, sand, live rock(?it is getting there), a bucket and a $30 gift card to Home Depot. I still need a heater, some of the wood to craft the stand, and livestock; although I should wait some time before adding livestock. I hope to complete the stand this weekend with a few Home Depot supplies.

That would be great. I have a little money left over from student loans and so I could buy a bulb.
This means that it can house coral.
PM sent
Thanks,
Jesse
Edit: P.S. If I do coral I should probably run a little carbon. Good idea?
