Topic: Sick Fish Posted: February 18 2005 at 1:08am |
My wife called me and tols me all my Fish (3) are looking sick and tired. She says they have a film covering them that looks like White "Bubbles" or lots of small "dots" The three fish are all damsels . it is a 20 gallon tank very standard. The last water change was about a week and a half ago. I will test the water when I get home and see if I find anything I was just hoping someone could point me in the right direction before I lose them. By the way she also says all the Coral, Crabs,Snails, and peppermint shrimp are looking great. We did lose a Yellow clown goby about 3 weeks ago but I changed the water after that. I think he died because my damsels don't play well with others and would not let him eat. Then again it just coul have been bad luck he was only in the tank a week. My littlest girl was sad when her "Sunshine" went away. Anyway back to the post! If anybody has ideas or has more questions I will try to answer but I need to get home and then sleep and then work and then look at the tank. But I can always call my wife and ask more questions.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!

I agree. My suggestion... set up a quarentine tank, quarentine the fish and medicate as neccessary in that same tank for 6-8 weeks, then return them to the reef. But, I've had the same problem, didn't quarentine, lost about $300 in fish and rode it out... Guess I should practice what I preach, huh???

My wife called and said one of the fish is already dead. Is it to late to save the other two?

Shanepj,What's happened with your fish? Curious that you haven't posted since.
Just FYI, if Damsels die, it's because they were in bad shape already or your tank is in need of better biological filtration.
If you feel like getting some good advice, let us know how your tank is set up and we will make suggestions. Fish should not be dieing like that.
What are you using for filtration?
for circulation?
and for lighting?

I lost one other fish. My last one is a domino He is the biggest one. He is starting to look okay now. I lost both fish the same day before I ever got home. these three were the first fish I had and had gone through a lot. I bought a yellow clown goby about a month and a half ago. I had him about three weeks, when I noticed him missing. I did my water change about a week early because he had died. Everything seemed fine for about a week or so and then this happened.
I have a 20 gallon tank. there is a powerhead in both top back corners and I also have a Prism Skimmer (Hangs off the back of the tank) I run in it. I can never seem to get the pictures to work properly. I have trouble editing them to make them small enough. If any one wants pictures let me know and I will E-mail them. Or I have set up a very poorly made quick WebSite you could look at. The E-mail is probably the better Option

Truthfully the tank has never really recovered. It had been doing really good and now I cannot seem to get it going again. I was told I need to get a cup of sand and some LW for my next water change. One of these days I won't be sick or at work and can get the time to do that.
Also I had a question about something growing in my tank. Can anyone Identify it for me? It is slowly growing. My wife hates it and I am not sure about it.
Thanks for all the help!!!!!!

As you might imagine, there is something you can learn from us here.
I asked:
What are you using for filtration?
for circulation?
and for lighting?
You told us that you have 2 powerheads and a prism skimmer. This tells us some(20%) of what we need to know, but perhaps I need to be more specific.
1. Substrate depth and particle size?
2. Amount of rock? (you showed us a pic with sponge on the rock so this gives us an idea of it's quality)
3. what else is in the tank?
4. what are the lights? Ordinary Fluorescent, Power Compact Fluorescent, VHO, etc.
5. What are all the living organisms that you know of in the tank?
If you can set the actual size of the pic by pixels at 72/inch and total size at 700 wide, all your pics should fit on the screen.

also like everyone told me when i got my tanks just be patient and let thing settle before you do too much (see everyone..i listened )

IT looks like form the pic on the web site that he posted that he ahs around 20 pounds of LR, and pc lighting, I guess that it is dual 55 watt.
He has a single LPS (looks like frog spawn, might be a hammer, I didn't look to closely at it.)
There is a clown in the picture that he didn't mention, but he may just be counting that as one of the damsels.
Shane if you can also post what water params are.
In particular Specific Gravity, Amonia, Nitrate, and PH. (If you have something to test the Alkalinity then that too.)
How often do you fee the tank, and what are you feeding, how often do you do water changes and how mch water do you change.

Okay sorry it took a little time to get back to everyone. First I want to say thanks for all the help. And also this is a long post. Sorry!
Here is a little more detail about the tank. The story of my tank is that it had been doing extremely well. I had a leather coral and a couple colors of buttons. (Not sure that is what they are called, but they are cool) along with a few fish. The clown being one of them along with a very cool red scooter blenny. My youngest at that time (2 year old) turned the heat all the way up on the tank. By the time I got home and saw the tank, most everything was dead or dying. The only fish to survive was the clown. Most of the coral was killed off along with the snails, crabs, and shrimp. Since that time the fish had seemed to be doing well It has been a year or more and I still cannot get any real growth out of the coral. So recently my fish died and I am very sad. The coral still seems to be doing well so I have hope.
Tank
It is a 20 gallon tank. 24X12X17
I have about a 2 1/2 - 3 inch sand bed. I originally set it up with help from Ryan Foote. I got my original live water and a large quantity of live sand from him. I also added in 1 bag of carib sea sand to finish of the sand bed. I have a Prizm skimmer (That hangs on the back) and a rotating power head in each top back corner. I have around 20 pounds of Live rock from the fish store that I purchased to start.
Lighting
A coralife, aqualife power compact..65 watt 50/50 it has a Actininc blue 03 (50%) bulb and a 10,000K (50%) phosphors (This is straight from the original box) It is on a timer that turns on at 5:00 PM and turns off at 11:00 PM every day Mark as per your suggestion when you stopped by, The to cover of the tank has been removed. (This was 7-8 months ago.)
Fish
All the fish have died. When I originally posted this the Clown was the fish that had died and I had a blue damsel and the domino damsel left. A few weeks ago I also had a Yellow clown goby. He was the first fish I had added in a while. He was looking very good and then one day was missing. We never saw him again. I also have had a scooter blenny in the tank. That was my favorite fish he was a gift for my wife. He was “Cooked” by my daughter in the original “Incident”.
Other
I have probably 10 crabs and 10 snails. I also have a large colony of tiny baby snails (There are a few on the left side of the last picture on the post) I am not sure the number but I always am seeing a lot of them. I also have 2 peppermint shrimp. I had an emerald crab but I have not seen him in a month. I also have a fighting conch. I duess that is a sponge I have and I recently have found a few peanut worms. At least that is what they were identified as. I also see a few worms that I am not sure what they are. I could not get a picture this time because they are not out all the time. They are quite long and spiny looking they are Red and white. Kinda like a gummy worm coloring.
Coral
The main coral is a green hammer coral it is a pretty good size, at least for my tank. I bought it around six months ago. It has started 2 new branches since then and seems to be doing quite well. The rest are all from a frag meeting from before the “Incident”, and are about the same size they were then. They were in “Hibernation” for a while. Now they look okay but again nothing has really grown fro almost a year. The only exception being the green hammer. I am not sure of all the names so I have pictures posted at the bottom for all to see. (I Hope)
Water
I am not sure of my water parameters right now. I will have to post those later. I do a 5 gallon water change on the 20th of every month. Sometimes I am a day or two off of the schedule. and I top off the tank almost daily.
Feeding
I currently feed the fish daily a small chunk of frozen brine shrimp. I use shrimp pellets every two or three days for the crabs and shrimp and other life at the bottom. I have changed foods a couple of times and I use to feed the fish every other day but things started to look unhealthy so I went back to every day. I try to feed only what they will eat in about 5 min. I also use liquid marine plankton with cyclop-eez (It is in a little pump). about once a week instead of the frozen food.

Oh yes, I remember visiting.
Thanks for the pics. From the look of it, I'd say that your new fish had something (a fungal or bacterial infection?) that infected the others, possibly unrelated to the general condition of the aquarium. Damsels are very difficult to kill, even when they have ich, and I do not believe, from your brief description, that ich was the culprit.
Wait a couple weeks before you introduce a fish, to give whatever organism it was, time to die off.
Either use a submersible heater or glue or tape the heater knob so your daughter cannot turn it.
The lights bulbs are old. Replace them and coral should grow better.
