Will sps corals benefit from the fatty acids in Selcon??  I was thinking about soaking the Golden Pearl with it before feeding...  if it will help.

Thanks,

Each of them are good foods, i.m.o.   You can feed them separate if you want, or soaking the GP's can't hurt.  I sometimes put Selo in with my GPs.  Works for me.

Selcon is so high in good stuff, it can attract bacteria. I keep killing
my BBS with it! (You know you have bacteria in a culture when it
foams!). And, it can cause an increase in nitrate production. I add it
to my fish food, but only let it soak for a few minutes before I add
the whole kit and caboodle to my system. But, our system is over
200 gallons. I don't add the water to my nano, I think it is actually
too much of a good thing!

I must add, I add this to my reef, but I have an outrageous algae
"problem". If you don't appreciate algae, maybe you should just add
it once in a while.

P>S> The high fatty acid content has been shown to build up in
captive fishes livers. It is not recommended to feed it everyday.

I've got to think about your question for a bit. I think fish need fatty
acids, 'cause it's used in cell wall production, and they need to
replace cell just like we do. But, corals? I think not for sps....Maybe,
softies?

Thanks Suzy that's good to know.  I do not appreciate algae unless it's in the refug  so I'll be careful.

I put a few drops of Selcon in my coral feed once or twice a month.  I also put a few drops of Garlic Xtreme.

I read once where someone did an experiment with a glucose mix, sould have even been dissolved table sugar. They said that they experienced a phenominal growth spurt and then a slow crash. I guess like kids on a sugar high. I think that they were trying to draw comparrisons to Weiss' black powder stuff.

There is a HUGE thread right now in the chemistry forum at reefcentral on dosing ethanol (vodka) in your reef.  Apparently this is kinda popular in Germany right now.  The "inventors" of this method will have an upcoming article in one of the on-line reefing mags.  It's based more or less in sound science, but there are risks.  And it's really only meant for tanks with high nutrient loads to begin with... anyway, I'm getting off topic.  In that thread I asked about using sugar as the carbon source rather then vodka, Habib (owner of Salifert) posted that he had tried sugar before and had problems with sps corals.  Sucrose is the sugar you'd have in the cupboard, glucose is a different sugar and might effect corals different.  Anyway, it doesn't sound like sugar is something to put in a reef

We're getting a tiny bit off track? ( I know, that is so unlike us!)

Do corals need fatty acids?
