Topic: Red-Legged Hermit Crab (Dardanus Megistos) Posted: July 02 2007 at 8:57am |
I just got a book titled "The Simple Guide to Marine Aquariums" by - Jeffrey kurtz
In this book on page 89 refers to a Red-Legged Hermit Crab (Dardanus Megistos) and sais that this crab eats Aptasia.
Does anyone have any experience with this or own one? Any ideas where to get one?

Careful. If it's the same as the red-legged I've got, he'll eat almost anything. Very aggressive. Has attacked anenomes, urchins, starfish, snails, other hermits. He is one mean SOB.

I have one with red legs and don't know if it is a scarlet or a red-leg. It is the only hermit I have had that has been a perfect reef inhabitant. It is maybe 3/4" and has not changed shells in a year and a half. I have no aiptasia but can't credit the hermit crab.

Hi,
I probably got every hermit know to man(and very scared snails) in my tank but have never seen them eat aiptasia. True peppermint shrimp are known to eat aiptasia and did take care of some smaller ones that I had pop up.
Cheers!

I agree with using hungry peppermint shrimp to control or reduce aiptasia. It has worked for many people.

They are available at most if not all of them. It's just a matter of current stock.

Just make sure you are getting true pep's (Lysmata wurdemanni) and not the similar (Lysmata rathbunae), which do not eat aiptasia. Sometimes you may run across camel shrimp that are mislabeled as pep's also. Hers's a write-up if you are interested. http://tinyurl.com/2y68af
Cheers!
