I have a purple tang right.
Its really cool/weird/unknown to me why when we feed or turn off pump for whatever reason my purple Tang will turn blue white and his hidden stripe in middle will really turn white.
Now is this due to stress/excitement/bladda bladda etc etc.
I want to understand this better as to whats going thru his little head.
I want him to be happy
ANYONE HAVE IDEA?

I have never had a purple tang, but i have had a hippo tang and i currently have a yellow tang, they go more pale when they are trying to hide or are scared. If u ever look at them right as your lights come on, they are not as bright or at their fullest color as later on when they get more active and adjust.
I don't know if this helps any, but just saying my experience with tangs so far, but like i said i have only had 2, and not that particular one.
edit: i turn the pumps off if i am feeding pellets/flakes, but if i am feeding frozen foods i keep the pumps on. I do this to make sure the fish get most of it, not the shrimp or crabs.

I don't understand how you wouldn't turn of pumps for feeding,seems like a waste of food besides clogging filter bag/media alot faster.
I also think when i feed it allows time for my corals to feed, especially my stony coral, after about 15 minutes my stony will have all his tentacles out-mouths open and I just bump pump so it distributes food to everyone even my starfish come out and eat better..
Common sense would say if i dump a bunch of dt's liquid and any other liquids plus food this will be outta my display tank and into filters/skimmers and sump faster than anything has a chance to feed properly.. Im excited to get my vortech in cause then i can turn off tank pumps skimmers/filters etc and just leave vortech on to move around water up top for 30 min or so till i see starfish and others back into hiding with a full belly.
Besides fact fish food is so expensive these days, I wont even go into the treatments i do but just food i do a square of krill/cyclops/mysis x2/ fish flake/pellets every other day or 3 days...
I have double bugs than normal to though, i think thats why tank is so clean from algae and my rocks are so white and not green.
I like it bright and reflective.

I always keep high flow in my tank during feeding the only thing that goes off is my skimmer and the filter bag is on the skimmer return.

I keep my mp40w on but if I were to keep the pump on there be a lot of food going down the overflow. I have always turn my pump off. With all of this is when you see how much flow you get from the mp40w

I turn my pumps off when feeding. That way I can make sure that it all gets eaten. I also have a few skiddish eaters that won't get any food if the pumps are on. < id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall;" id="jsProxy" ="">

That's a Tang that still is not comfortable in that tank. Consider what it takes to make fish more comfortable.
What kind of food does this Purple Tang like?
Regarding the food, from what I have seen in all kinds of setups, the best reason for turning off the pumps is to keep food from being skimmed off the top of the water and going down the overflow.
But if the food is not allowed to float, there is no reason to turn off the pumps. I rarely feed dry foods because I have seen how they are made and will not feed them to my fish if I can avoid it. I will only feed the dry stuff if i am in a hurry and it's already been a few days since I last fed. But when feeding dry foods, simply place it underwater a little at a time, allowing the fish to eat most of it before adding more.
Frozen food should be allowed to thaw so that it can be fed a little at a time and will go into the water column where fish can quickly gooble it up, before another glob is dropped in.

I don't turn off anything to feed. I don't use any filter socks or pads. Some is wasted in the skimmer but I like some to go into the fuge and feed the peppermint shrimp I have in there, as well as the pods and such.

Well I got a 40 last week, Da** GINA........
Now I got holes in my sand,whew those things move some water.../on low
Ill get him into my new redsea as soon as allowed but im wondering if its cause hes stuffed in that tiny tank, but it has to do with turning pump off.
my common sense would tell me hes stressed from air/water movement across gills.
or incorporates pump off with feeding time and gets excited in a way?????????
Da** i wish i was a fish wisperer.. maybe tonight ill get drunk and slap my head on tank and see if i can see any fish fin morse code. Maybe I can find my drager unit!

I shut off my main pumps to feed (thanks to a controller, its one push of a button) All of my closed loops and other ph are still running. That keeps the food moveing with out it going through the filters.

I also shut off my pumps for feeding. It's automated by my controller and synced with my feeder. I only feed the corals once or twice a week when I am home and I like to shut down the pumps for that as well. I like to feed the corals with a turkey baster and let them eat before the pumps go back on. I would rather the fish and corals get their fill than see the food go through the filter. Looks like everyone does it differently and it works no matter how you do it. I guess tank size and the way its plumbed as well as the stock list will determine what works best for you.
As far as the tang goes many fish exhibit this behavior when startled, My Fox Face does it all the time. I would get him into his permanent environment soon as you can though to stress him as little as possible.

I use one of those infomercial portable light switches for my tanks.
Super easy to mount wherever you like and makes me feeding easy and saves money.

This kind of relates to your other question regarding noises in the tank....I think the tang is a little stressed in the tank so any change makes him jumpy and a little freaked out...when he gets moved over to the new tank he will probably relax more.... :)
