A little reading will greatly benefit your future coral selections. FYI, Colt Coral was the common name but a few years ago it's name was changed to Klyxum. It's naturally quite pink, which possibly explains why a little dye can make it look almost fluorescent. The real key to brilliantly colored coral is lighting. That's the advantage of using a pink/purple fluorescent tube for every 2-3 blue/actinic tubes. At the bottom of this post I have added pics of how the real Klyxum looks. The lighting was 2-250W 14K MH and 2 VHO Fluorescent tubes, one Super Actinic and one Actinic White. I've always been confused by that name Actinic White, since the tube clearly glows a purplelish-pink color, almost exactly like the plant grow tubes commonly used in freshwater tanks. I was looking to see when the name was changed to Klyxum and found this article which was too good to pass by. I hope you find it helpful. Renaming our CoralsAlso found and copied here, is this tiny 2 post thread from 2006, mentioning one and answered by another of the geniuses of our hobby: ******************************** Klyxum coral ok with sps?Eric Borneman identified my one and only soft coral as a Klyxum
(colt). I realize that it has been only recently described as a separate
species, however, I have been told that it is one of the most "benign"
of the group of colts. I also know his standing about "separation"
from soft & hard corals. I am wanting to add some acros in my 55
gallon tank. Does the beautiful Klyxum have to go? I currently have
monti's doing fine. Thanks!

I do not agree that there is any big concern mixing hard and soft
corals. My aquaria have always been mixed. Perhaps it is because I use
carbon that things are OK (although I have not always done so), or
perhaps it is because there just is no true basis for such concerns, or
perhaps it applies to corals that I do not keep.
That said, many people worry about chemicals reported to be inside of
certain corals and macroalgae without much knowledge of whether they are
released in any significant quantities, or whether equally concerning
chemical;s are not present in other corals and marine organisms.
This article has a bit more on toxins in tank water:
Organic Compounds in the Reef Aquarium
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-10/rhf/index.htm
If I were you, and I liked that particular coral, I'd certainly keep it unless and until it seemed to be causing a problem.

If you were a smart store owner and this was your livelihood, you would not hesitate to place that coral back in your system so you could sell it to someone else that likes it. I mean no offense to hobbyists or the store, but good customer service and success in this industry means watching every penny. The store is awesome. They gave Tycer equal value replacement. Now the store can either 1) toss it and raise all their prices to make up for the loss, OR 2) they can send it back to the distributor for some credit and the distributor will re-sell it or toss it and raise their prices, OR 2) the LFS can keep their prices where they are by selling the fluorescent pink Klyxum to another hobbyist who is equally astounded by it's beauty That reminds me of a story we once heard from a guest speaker. This hobby expert told the story of how he was once observing the beauty of a particular Flowerpot Coral that a person claimed they had owned for about 8 years. Eight years!" remarked the expert, "That's practically unheard of for a Flowerpot Coral. How large was it when you bought it?" The owner replied that it hadn't grown much...He had bought it just a few months earlier. "But you told us you had that coral for 8 years?" In response the owner said that, Yes he has had a Flowerpot in that spot in his tank for that long, but then, revealing the rest of the story, "I replace it every time it dies."

I missed this post.
Just for information. It will not wipe out your tank if it dies, any more than anything else we have in there.
I have seen a lot of dyed corals. They have always come in bags of colored water.
Typically from California where some dishonest person is injecting them with dye. I'm sure Mark remembers the mess caused when a group was injecting Octopus dye in to everything from zoanthids to leathers. They never really knew what the resulting color would be until they did it.
This particular piece was from a trans shipment so it did not ever see hands in California. Further more it was in a bag of clear water. Yes the color was surprising but it didn't come in with any of the typical markers of a dyed coral. Could it be dyed? sure. Only time will tell. But then again are the zoanthids you just bought dyed.....
I give Adam Nielson ( Tycer) a lot of kudos for standing up for the store and not jumping on the store is always wrong band wagon. Just as expected Aquatic Dreams showed why they are one of the premier LFS in Utah by taking care of him.

Wow dion, wow.
The guy asks how much things are marked up normally. I state that most places are 2-3x but others are much more than that. That is fact. I didn't name any specific store nor will I. All the stores I know in utah don't mark up that high but in other places they certainly do! I read about a guy who had to pay $35/lb for live rock! It is the only store within hours of this guy. I felt terrible for him.
I know stores aren't making a killing. There is NO money in this hobby for local stores. Not when they have to compete with online vendors and people who open shop out of their house.
As I stated, I love aquatic dreams. There store is great and ryan is great to work with. I then gave kudos to ryan for doing the right thing IMO. If you don't think it was right, so be it. You can voice your opinions on here.
Why don't you try some tact and not being a complete asshole?
Tycer, sorry I helped and gave my opinion on the whole thing. I was a victim of dyed coral from a certain company back in the day. It sucks watching gorgeous things die and finding out they were dyed. They were doomed from day one in my tank and it wasn't my problem. After talking with Eric Borneman about it all, it made me sick what people would do for a little extra money.
So dion, leave me alone. I will flip my damn burgers while I put myself through school. It is good to know how judgemental and narcissistic you really are. No wonder another club was started with people like that in the presidency.

Its interesting that someone always bitches that the stores mark everything up by as much as 10 times. I really wish they would pull there head out and check these things before opening mouth and inserting foot. There is a mark up. If there wasn't how would the stores exist to support your hobby? Most wholesalers do not guarantee arrive alive. And furthermore if a store would ship something back to a wholesaler who do you think is going to pay the bill for the overnight shipping?
If you want to decide that the stores are making a killing with coral and fish prices I would recommend you open a store. Then you might be able to understand just what goes into overhead and running of a store. Till then, just keep flipping burgers.

Wow wow wow Ryan.
Its amazing that you can come on here and bash a store that did nothing wrong. Lumping them in something that happened to some guy you read about? What the hell made him pay $35lb for live rock? Did they put a freaking gun to his head?
Your right. Aquatic Dreams did an awesome job taking care of Adam.
Now Ryan.
I'm not here head hunting you. Hell I think your an alright guy. But what you are accusing me of is exactly what you did to Ryan (Aquatic Dreams) and his guys. Its posts like these that make the Local fish stores want to have nothing to do with the boards. When anybody can accuse and complain and the stores don't dare to fire back because of the drama. I give great Kudos to The Aquarium for defending itself a bit back.
Lets all think about what we are saying before running off with the mouth. I made the previous post to make a point. Other than giving me marginal advise on t-5 combinations I do like you. Lets just work at keeping the unnecessary drama off of the board.
Besides I like Burgers:) Honestly didn't know you flipped them. I was just throwing it in.
On top of it, it made Mark the voice of reason and thats scary!!!!!

And to clarify the t-5 comment. Ryan and I just have different likes in the color of our tanks. It wasn't bad advice, we just like different amounts of Blue;)

Oh so now you think you can be all cute and cuddly on here and I will be alright????
Both Dion's and my comments were uncalled for, I apologize on my end. I don't take back my advice. I never once threw any Utah store under the bus. I assumed (my bad, shouldn't have) where Adam got the coral. To me a coral that bright and out of the "norm" has to be altered. I just assumed (again, my bad) that any LFS owner would think the same.
If stores don't like me, well then I am screwed but I don't care either. We live in a day and age where info (true or false) spreads like wild fire. If a store treats me like total *poop*, I will say something. Teach your employees some customer service. Hell, if us burger flippers can have customer service, so can a LFS employee. Trust me, JCW's has great customer service, especially if I help you. The quickest way to get fired where I work is poor customer service. You can no show, be late and even steal, they will warn you first before firing. Poor customer service = fired on the spot.
For me I will be avoiding this site in the mornings and nights. I had ACL surgery last Thursday and my pain meds screw me up. I have hot flashes and mood swings like a woman in menopause, LOL.
So if I offended Ryan (Aquatic Dreams), I am sorry. I assumed the coral was bought online because in 6 years, I have NEVER seen a coral come in like that. Not in a store at least. I am sure they do but I never see them.
So my final words, I am glad everything was handled properly. Glad that Adam got money back and got something that has a better chance of surviving IMO.

Ryan, I hope you get feeling better. Hot flashes have to suck. My wife is fighting them.
I do apologize for offending you. I will remove anything aimed at you.
Yes Pam. I spent to much time at BCI today trying to understand some of the most arrogant, ignorant people I have ever met. I'm afraid if rubbed off on me.
I am glad to know there are good burger joints still around. I hate the customer service at most fast food places.
get feeling better my friend;)

Bottom line is I GOT TAKEN CARE OF BEYOND EXPECTATIONS from a LFS that I hope will still let me in their doors. I may too embarrased to show my face in there again. They did everything right, and maybe even more than they should have. There is no reason's for arguments, everything is great. I only came here for information and NEVER wanted this to turn into a trash and bash thread. I respect my LFS and hope everyone supports them. Please let this be a positive thread in support of our LFS. If you disagree, start your own tread.
