I bought a handful of margarita snails from Bird World the other day.  Every night I notice that a few of them have fallen from the rockwork and look to be saying "I've fallen and I can't get up".  Did I just get clumsy snails or are margarita's just bad climbers?  They don't appear to be able to right themselves either.  Just curious...

I thought Margarita snails could right themselves?  Are they the black snails that are kind of rounded?

Yes.  With a black foot.  I haven't witnessed a single one right itself.

I had the same problem. Once they were on their backs, the hermit crabs would attack. I had to save several live snails from attack and then flip them over.

Sorry to hear you got a batch of stressed snails. I suspect they were very weak from hunger. How long had BWPV had them? How much were they?

Snails seem okay for a long time, but we cannot see how stressed they may be. Herbivores have to eat a lot of plant matter every day just to get enough energy to survive. A week without much food is pretty hard on them.

It might help to place them in a tank with lots of easy algae (your cyanobacteria) so they can regain their strength, before they have to go into a relatively clean tank. We typically ask snails to work hard for their food or else go hungry in order to keep our tanks as algae free as we would like.

My 2 cents

At the time I purchased them there was an abundance of alage in my tank.  Although they have done a good job reducing it, there still is enough food for what I have, imo.  I'm not sure how long BW had them.  They were $1 each.  Maybe they were just weak from nothing to eat at BW?  The ones I could reach seemed to attach to rock just fine if I picked them up.  The ones I couldn't reach have appeared to die .

I also bought a few of those large mexican turbos.  WOW if it wasn't for their bulldozer additude, I think they'd be a big winner!  They eat more then any snail I've ever had.
