Topic: how to increase SG Posted: May 08 2006 at 9:42pm |
I would like to increase my salinity ... I have a batch of salt water mixed that is 1.022 ... (thats what my tank is running) ... can I just add say .. 1/2 gallon of 1.022 to my tank and as it evaps it will raise the SG right?
Is there a better way to raise it? .. I would like to target 1.024 ...

that, or use slightly saltier water for your changes. Either way, make the shift gradually and you'll be fine.

Do you have a refractometer? 140 gallons is a good size tank. I would replace the evaporated water with your makeup water for a couple of days and check your salinity every day.
How high are you planning on going? I run mine at 1.024 If you don't have one then I would take a water sample to your LFS and have them check it with one.

Well .. I dont have a refractometer ... but I compared my readings with Marks and its right on ... so ...
I do have an auto top off .. so I was just thinking I could add ~ 1/4 to 1/2 gallon every day until I hit 1.024 ....

Out of curiosity, why did you choose 1.024?

Well .. it seems that this is what most people are running there SG at ... I am not getting good expansion on my sps .. and the tanks that have great expansion are running ~ 1.024 ... so .. just a little experiment I am trying ..

Cool. Let us know how it goes. I generally shoot for 1.026.
Good luck.

Because that's closer to the salinity at a tropical reef.

Oh good, so I can say my laziness in letting my tank creep up to 1.026 was a design function and not simply neglect
