Topic: Houdini Fish - Back from the dead, but stressed Posted: April 26 2010 at 1:04pm |
So last Thursday I bought a Jawfish. He seemed to be doing fine, was a little stressed out so I decided to keep checking on him over the next week, feeding him garlic soaked food.etc
Friday I got home and he had dug a burrow, ate food great and everything, kept poking his head out of his house to check up on everything outside the tank, exactly what I was hoping my jawfish would do. Even though he wasn't burrowed in the most favorable place in the tank, he had probably picked the most secure area.
And then I woke up on Saturday, no signs of the fish. I did my weekly water change, sat by my tank for 30 minutes just to see if he would come out, but he didn't seem to be there.
So after buying the rest of the things I needed for my Jawfish condo, I decided to take the tank apart, I wanted to push my rock back anyways to give more room for corals.
I pulled all the rock out of it and 60% of the water put it all into a tupperware bin with a powerhead in it for about an hour, sifted through all of my sand, and there was not a sign of the jawfish anywhere, checked my back chambers, checked the rocks and he was gone.
Basically what I am trying to figure out, is if clean up crews will devour a whole fish? I have some pretty big hermits in my tank, a starfish and a mithrax crab. The only thing I can think that may have happened is that my clean up crew finished him off during the night?
I'm not really bummed out about the fish being dead, i'm just mad that I can't even take the dead fish in for store credit, but I guess my clean up crew deserves a $20 snack

I've had a lot of fish disappear. If you clean up crew gets to them, it's only a matter of a few hours before they're gone. I had a yellow tang I saw in the morning, gone at lunch, pulled up a few rocks at mid-afternoon and I found his hollowed out body. If I had waited till dinner he probably would've been bones.

some jawfish like to jump and if you have any cats or dogs they usually can eat them pretty quick but maybe thats not the case

Well, I was topping off my water tonight and I see this white thing move to the top in my pump chamber, it was my Jawfish and he is alive! he was really stressed out and hungry when I got him into my tank, so I installed a quick fish saver so he couldn't jump back there again. my wife fed him some food which he ate as much as was near him, I soaked it in a little bit of garlic, which I will continue to do. But I did see a little red mark on him, like a scrape, so I am wondering if there is anything I need to do about it? Should I go buy some Selcon, or should I just keep soaking in garlic for the next bit?

Why are you soaking the food in garlic?

I'd just keep an eye on it. It will probably heal up fine on it's own and the garlic oil should ward off any infection in the mean time. Glad to see the little guy wasn't dead. I had several fish go missing and never found a trace of them. The clean up crew can be very efficient at removing the corpse.

Some of us believe in the power of garlic Shane !
I actually soak my food in garlic almost every time I feed - but mostly because I have some finicky fish that won't come out to eat unless I entice them a bit more.
Glad to see your jawfish still alive! What a survivor!

Mostly I was trying to soak the food in garlic because he is still stressed out. swimming fast to hiding places, and breathing somewhat heavily
He still has most of his coloration, doesn't look like he got any thinner while he was back there. As far as I can tell he just has that tiny scratch so I think he will be fine.
I have a small Jawfish condo in the tank, so I am hoping he will find that sometime today, that or start digging again

Hey I don't have to worry about blood sucking fish at all!

My father-in-law pops the garlic tablets for all kinds of things. Apparently, he also believes!
BTW - avoid the blood sucking fish varieties. If you look directly in their eyes, you'll be instantly put into a transe.
