Need help on this one!! Our tank is a 58 gallon bow. Just turned on my return pump. It is a 9.5, the 2 drain lines are 1 1/2" and the 2 return lines are 1". Returns are hard piped, drains are flex with barbed fittings. Drains and returns are bulkheads in the back of the tank at the top. My drains have a tee that is capped at the top w/a 1/4" hole drilled in each one. Both of my returns are below the surface in my sump/fuge. My overflow is in the tank, 2 ells are turned down in the overflow and are siliconed into the bulkheads. I am getting a ton of bubbles back to the sump/fuge. Have removed caps from the tees to see if this helps, it does not. Is it possible that I am returning to much water to fast back to my sump thru these 2 drains? Help will be much appreciated, this is our first time setting up a fuge with a return pump.

Bubbles should not be an issue in the fuge.

The pump is picking them up and they are getting back into the main tank.

Slow the flow and that might help. Baffles help. Time will help sometimes. I would have to see the tank to tell you more.

My brother tried a DIY skimmer using a pop bottle where the drain went directly into the side of the bottle and the frothy water kind of separated there. The bubbles mostly rose up the neck and the water went down.
The key to eliminating bubbles is to slow the water movement. Most people try to use baffles to eliminate bubbles. Personally I've seen a better system by just making the thing act like the mississippi. The wider the channel the slower the flow. That way the bubbles have a chance to rise before the next step in their path. A large growth of Chaetomorpha also provides surfaces where the tiny bubbles stick, join together and then rise.

Look up a "Herbie" drain system, or check out Ryan's 40 gal build thread. They run without any bubbles, or noise. I have used one also, they work great.

Slowed the flow and stopped the bubbles. The only thing you can hear now is the sound of the water rippling on the surface. Kind of a calming effect after a hard day. Soon as our tank clears I will get a pic or two up of the fuge/sump. I have had more trouble w/this tank than all the others I have had combined. It is kind of sobbering! Thanks for all of the input. This was my first attempt at drilling a tank (with water and livestock still in it, only about 1/2 full of course), building my own sump/fuge and internal overflow from plexiglass and plumbing them together. I think it turned out pretty well, so anyone with little or no experience can do it. It just takes a little drive, a lotta help and support from your spouse and some folks on this board! Looking back I wish I would have left out the 2 baffles I put in the sump. Mark, I agree they seem to force the flow. After about 4 days I picked up a little gurgling in the drains, will try some airline tubing in the holes in the caps to see if this helps.
