Hi All,

After looking at bfesslers recent post about him setting up his frag tank in his basement, it got me wondering.

I've been running a 55g bowfront corner tank sumpless for a while.  There is no room for a HOB or a sump underneath. 

However, we do have our laundry room about 20 ft away from my tank.  Is that too far to run a water line to a sump or is that just a matter of pump power?  Do some of you have sumps in other rooms?

i dont think you will need a strong pump to get 20 vertically, but it would be wise to get a powerful one just in case. pump are rated in height since its going to fight gravity, i would assume it would need to fight some gravity

mine would be on the same floor, so only horizontal distance really.

I think the biggest issue with having a sump on  the same floor 20+ feet away will be getting good flow from the tank to the sump not pumping it back. You will need to make sure the plumbing has a constant downward slope and size it large enough to freely move the water to the sump. The more horizontal the slope of the pipe the slower water will move toward the sump and if the slope is reversed or heads uphill you could get sediment collecting in the low spots. As long as you have a fairly large diameter pipe and a constant drop in the line it should work.

When I was doing my pond the general rule I learned about "head" is anything that is 10 feet of vertical equals 1 foot of head or horizontal rise.  Burt really has a great point as well about flow to the sump.
