 Topic: PVC cement?

I was wondering if it is ok to use pvc cement to glue my plumbing together for my reef tank or if that will put toxins into my system? If not, what do people use for their plumbing? I am planning to put a bead of silicone around the seams, but wondering what to use to seal it together?

Heck I glue and 15 minuets later I fire up my pumps .. and the only reason that I wait 15 minuets is so I can go back threw it and make sure I glued everything  I have this strange habit of forgetting an elbow or two ...

I've heard of others glueing and only waiting a few minutes with good luck. My guess is that it is safe.

Sorry to jump the tread, but is it ok to just use silicone for the pvc fittings? The reason I ask is I just aquired a 210 gallon with two bulk heads in the rear. The previous user did not glue the pvc but used silicone. I assume this because the bulkheads are covered with silicone.
Iandawson, When I used Christys Red Hot glue, I only let it set for about 1 hour. That stuff bonds instantly. I didn't have any problems firing up the pump after an hour. If you use the purple primer and clear glue combo, I would let is sit overnight as Dion mentioned.

Silicone may seal but it will not bond to the PVC strong enough to hold pressure (like it would with glass.) The previous owner probably was trying to seal a leak.

I better do it the safe way and stay with the glue. I was curious to find out if anyone used silicone.
I'll be setting it up tomorrow after the tile has cured. With a little luck, I may have it looking good enough to enter the reef tour.

PVC glue is actually a solvent. I melts the plastic to weld it together.
