I have a 55 gallon tank that does not have a over flow in it. I want to put a over flow in it and wondering if I can drill a hole in a top fin tank from petsmart with my fish and everything still in it. I would just drain the water half way down. Is it possible without breaking the glass and not killing everything in my tank?

Really wherever you want should work, i've seen holes in the back about 6" away from the corners (so the box is hidden) on the sides, in the middle, whatever suits you best.  Just make sure you dont get too close to the corners of the tank, or the top/bottom, you don't want to crack your tank with everything in it.

You need to be careful with 55's i've read that a lot of them (especially from walmart)  are tempered on every panel to reduce the thickness of the glass and shipping weight
