Hi All, just wanted to introduce myself, I'm new to the board and new to SW. Making the transition from FW to SW, I still have a FW, but waiting for the inhabitants to 'thin out'... I have a couple fish in there that are over 5 years old. Anyway, I'm excited to join the SW world but am stumbling over the initial startup costs..!!! My FW live in a 25g and my SW is 55g (D.I. $30  ) with a 10g sump/fuge. Just put in 40lb live sand... and have about another 20 to add, hopefully getting some LBTR from another member here this week, but will still need to p/u some more LR. Tank is cycling right now and just adding the first initial inhabitants (chromis) to help the cycle. I've learned lots so far from this board and hope to keep learning more from all the great posts/feedback I see here. EVERYONE I talk to refers me here... so MUST be a great place with a great bunch of people. Phil.

Hello Phil,
The costs are less when you know more. Here is a thread about how to keep costs down, but it sounds like you may already know some of it.
Cycling a new tank is less common than it used to be because we now know how to do it better. Don't sacrifice fish to cycle the tank. Read the post above to learn how to do it.
This is the best place to get the right answers. Come here with anything you hear and we will help you understand.

Welcome! You'll find that everyone here is friendly and helpful! One thing you'll find with reefing in particular is that there are so many ways to accomplish the same things, and that most of the time none of them will be the "wrong way". Just do lots of research, know exactly what you want before you start building towards anything, and then take clear thought out steps to get there. Don't cut corners and it'll all work out.
