this is a total noob question, but can I add kalk straight to my ato reservoir.   the reservoir is a 20 gal rubbermaid with a pump connected to an ato.   Is there easier/better ways of doing this without buying dosing pumps?

Yes you can do it this way, it is the way I added kalk for a year.  However you do not want to add saturated kalk water to fast or the PH will rise to fast. What pump do you have on your ATO? and how much does your waterlevel drop before the pump kicks on?  If you use something like and aqualifter which is slow you should be fine, If you have a large surface area in the pump chamber so that it takes alot of evaporation before the float switch falls and the pump kick in and then you have a big pump that fills it back up fast you will raise the PH to quickly.

I have heard it can cause more wear on your pump and build up in your tubing and pump but I never had a probelm for the year I used it.
