I pruchased my 4 stage RO unit at a LFS for around $160, but that was about 5 years ago, but I still get Zero TDS and have yet to replace a single piece of media in the unit.
Also, tap water may be fine for fish only, but from what I have been warned of, it can contain a lot of heavies, depending on where you live. Just make sure you dechlorinate it.
I think I would stay away from using tap water if you are on a well system though.
I understand your concern though. My RO unit produces about 25% pure H2O, and 75% effluent that goes down the drain.

that is why your clean water output is so low. the media is so clogged with crap from 5 years, you spend 60 bucks get all new filters and it will be more effecinat, and get your TDS meter calibrated, I promise it is off. after 5 years it is bound to be off.

I have used tap water ran through a brita water filter (30 dollars) for the last year and have had no problems, no algea blooms or sick animals or coral.
I did just purchase my first RO/DI unit for 70$ and it will be here on moday and I will have to let you know If I start seeing a diffrence. I know it will be some time to see one if any. But I finaly bit the line and got one, I know it can't hurt having one.

Thanks Tazman. I have pondered if that is in fact the case. And being 5 years since i had it new, I dont remember what the ratio of clean/rejected water was back then.
As for the TDS meter, I have it tested at a reputable LFS, so I can only assume that it is calibrated accurately. Regardless, thanks for the input.
