Power outage WVC

Dan,
 I hope it does not last too much longer? Did you call the Rocky Mountain and see what the issue was and maybe an estimated time frame it would be out? I hate when the power goes out it is so stressful.

wow. The power finally came on at 2:52 am. what a long night. at 11:00 pm is was noticing some of the fishes were having a hard time breathing. All the star fishes were out of their hiding places. On top of that alot of my acros were expose out of the water for at least 5 hours and whole house smell like the ocean side fish shop.  Now I was panicing because I didn't expect the power to out for this long. As I struggle to figure out what to do. A light came into my head, "what about the car?". My FJ had a built in converter that output 400 watts. I ran a expension power plug from my drive way to the fish tank. I was able to get the main circulation pump and a air stone pump going for both my nano and main tank. That was a life saver. My car was on idile for 4 hours.

I recommend everyone get a generator. I have a 13,000 watt one hooked up so when the power goes out for more than 5 min, the generator comes on and powers everything on the tank and then some. It was only about $650 and it's saved me many times.

I think it's a Briggs & Stratton. My Grandpa is an electrician so he was nice enough to put in the electrical circuit and transfer switch for us. It also puts power to the furnace and the fridge. 

It has come in handy on more than one occasion 

and a Briggs & Stratton. He got hooked up on that generator.

bur01014 wrote: congrats on making it through that night....I had the same experience about 2 months ago.  I went out a bought a $30 dollar portable car jump starter.(random I know) But, It ran my powerheads for the whole 8 hours the power was out and only drained the jump starter about halfway.  You just plug one of those cigarette lighter transformer adapter things in that has normal 3 prong plug-in outlets.(probably similar to your vehicle) Excuse my lack of technical terms.  It wasn't strong enough to run my large heater, but I am not in the position to get a generator, plus its always nice to have on trips or when a car doesn't start.   I just threw a blanket it over the tank and the temp didn't drop too much.

Remember the temp can drop to 65, even 60 without causing any long term problems. Cooler water actually helps a ton with oxygenation.  If I remember correctly, water holds about 30% more O2 at 65 as it does at 78 and since cooler temperature decreases metabolism, less O2 is required by the organism.
Also, SPS can stay out of water in a humid environment for the entire tidal cycle, 4-6 hours.
