Any glass will do. The reason they use tempered glass is that if it breaks, a large fragment doesn't have a chance to fall and slice you or a coral. Tempered glass is ~3 times the cost. Just be careful and regular glass should not be a problem.

if I remember right glass in and of itself filters out the uv rays from the bulbs. That's why you can take a nap in front of a sunny glass door in the winter and not be sunburned when you wake up.

Like everyone says any type of glass protects UV. just dont turn on the lights without a glass covering it. make sure you get the right measurement to so it can fit perfectly specially on how thick it is.
