has anyone setup a water system like this? i want 2 water drums preferably 55gal each "big blues" one for fresh water and one for salwater down in the basement. eventually id like to setup an auto top-off but right now i cant afford it. i live about 45 minutes from the nearest LFS and 25 min. from the nearest store to buy ro water. i need advice on every aspect of a project like this. it is such a pain to walk in the grocery store with all 6 containers twice a week and its not cheap either. i want tobe able to take care of all my water needs at home all the time. oh yeah i also need to know where to get a decent ro/di unit to hook up to my water line in the basement

I would use two 50 gallon plastic barrels. You can find these around at food storage places or even the DI. Use a float valve for an evaporative cooler in the fresh water barrel. You may need to cut a hole in the top of the barrel to allow acces to install the valve. (I use the barrel standing on the end).

Plumb your RO unit to this float valve. Your RO will have an auto-shut off and will automatically turn off the incoming water once the float valve causes back pressure. This will provide you 50 gallons of RO water at any time.

Use a submersible pump in the fresh water barrel to remove water for top off or to fill your SW barrel. Use a MAG 12 or similar to mix the SW and to pump from the SW barrel into containers for water changes, etc.

IME, a single 50 gallon barrel for RO storage will be sufficient. I use rubbermaid garbage cans to prepare SW for water changes. Since I don't need SW on-hand all the time, it is easier to prepare it as needed and avoid having two large containers of water sitting around.
