Hey guys, I'm looking for advice on what flow rate I should get my powerheads.  I have a 40g tank.  I read on other sites that 10X the total tank size should be adequate, but I just wanted to ask my trusted WMAS members Wink

I have a 45 and run two Koralia 2's and a Mag 5 return. It seems to be plenty of flow for my tank. I've got about 20 mini colonies of SPS now and they all grow well. I tried a Koralia 3 and it was WAY to much. All my corals would stay closed and my fish would hide in the rocks. Took it out and put the 2's in and all is well.

Edit: So two Koralia 2's = 1200 GPH and One Mag 5 is 500. So a total of 1700 GPH. Gives me about 38x turn over an hour.

I think the 10x is considered great for a FW setup.  I've always heard 25x as a minimum for reefs.

If you have the money I would recommend trying a vortech mp10.  That way you can dial the flow up and down and find what works best for your reef.

Flow is really a relative thing. It is influenced by the position and direction of the flow and where the rock is placed which acts as a barrier to the flow. I have just one single Maxijet 1200 in my 40 gal tank and EVERYTHING is growing great. If I remember correctly, the rating on a MJ1200 is 360 gph. On a side note this MJ1200 is modified into a "Poorman's Wavemaker" and is positioned to give maximum benefit. Smile
