what size heater should I get for my 90g and 20g fuge? total of about
110 gallons of water. or should I get two smaller ones thanks

I use a single 300 watt on my 120 with 50 gallon sump. It did well all through the winter though we do heat the house at night. I would think 200-250 watt would do.

I use a 250 watt just like Mike suggested. My system is a 90g plus 45g sump/refugium and it works just great. My sump is even in a cool basement....

I personally always use two smaller heaters in case one quits. The odds of two quitting at the same time is probably way in my favor. But one quitting can happen. If you use two, of course you won't wake up in the morning to a 70 degree tank..

Some people do not even have heaters in their tanks. My 75 gallon with a 10 gallon sump and a 10 gallon refugium has no heater and no mechanical filtration. In fact, I have a fan that I run whenever my actinic lighting is on to help keep things running cooler. I have a problem with keeping my tank cooler than 80 degrees!
It will depend on how much lighting you have, how close to the water that lighting is, and how much heat your circulation pumps add to your system.

Funny thing about lights, they are usually only on during the day. Even with 1200 watts of lighting, at night my system will drop below 76 degrees without heaters. Of course I don't let it get warmer than 80 with the chiller either. But without fail the heaters come on every night to keep the system above 79 ....
But yes you are right some people don't need heaters. I am assuming someone asking about heaters feels they need them.

I had two 150w heaters on my 72g tank. One of them stuck on. Luckily it was not powerful enough to boil the tank. I recomend two undersized.

I would go with two undersized heaters also if the water temp drops at night. Either 100 or 150 watts.
A buddy of mine that was holding some SPS frags for me until my new tank was stable enough. He had a 125 gallon with 2 200 watt heaters. One heater stuck on last week and the temp went high enough to lose most of the SPS in the tank...

A very good investment is a Ranco single stage controller for your heaters. They can be picked up for as low as $50.00, and heaters getting stuck on will never be an issue again. Even when they work pefectly, heaters without a controller can cause tank temperature fluctuations of 2 and 3 degrees just because of the way their internal mechanism works.
