I am starting a new 144 gallon tank.  The tank will be on the main floor, but I plan to run the sump and refugium directly below it in the basement.  I am told that due to the increased distance, I will need a more powerful pump.  Any suggestions on pump selection?  Can I buy one based only on GPH, or does the distance require a specialzed pump?  Thank you!

WELCOME!

You need a pressure rated pump (most are) and you need it to be able to have the head pressure you desire at the level to which it is pumping. In other words if you desire 1200gph flow and the distance in height from the water level in the sump to the water level in the tank is 10' then you need a pump that will give you 1200gph flow at 10' head (pressure)

I hope this helps.

An Iwaki/Blueline 70 is about right.  A Sequence 3200SEQ19 is also about right.

I'd look around and choose a pump with the necessary capacity and as low a power draw as possible.  Then, use a closed loop or stream-type (Tunze stream, Hydor Korallia) powerheads for the rest of your flow requirements.

I've got a Iwaki 100 Japanese motor that runs great. $200.00  and its yours. It would give you plenty flow plus allow to run additional flow to frags tanks if desired.

Thank you for the input, I finally understand that jargon about "max head".  I have been running a 30 gallon marine tank, and this is my first venture with a big tank.  (had an 80 gallon Oscar tank, but that doesn't count...saltwater is a whole different animal).

I will contact you about the Iwaki pump.  From running prices on the internet and e-bay, that is a great deal!
