Topic: Your opinion on a refugium thought. Posted: December 07 2005 at 8:56pm |
Give me your opinion on my thoughts for a refugium....
the reason for the spot on the right is that i want my skimmer in my Refff, and to minimise micro bubbles going into my plants and algae. and the rocks on the left to create the trickling rock filter effect. Let me know... Rhine

I think either way would work. I do like the thought of getting rid of the bubbles sooner as in Jeffs diagram.

On the other hand, putting the skimmer before your macro might have the skimmer removing what the macro could easily? perhaps it makes no difference though as things pass through the sump hundreds of times before they're taken up by either the skimmer or the macro...

Both designs look great. I wish I had an acrylic or glass sump/refug. I went the very cheapo route (plastic) and visited walmart. Someday I hope to upgrade. :)
I know have no macro in there, lol. I recently removed the caluerpa and plan on replacing with chaeto. Anyhow, plastic is easy to drill, but as you can tell I need to drill a hole on the outlet to quiet the flushing down some.

Looks good to me!!!
My number one feature of a sump is water volume and it looks like you have it.
Is that behind the tank?

Jeff the grey box on my original picture IS a return baffle... Why the larger size of return area for the pump? here is a pick of what i have for the skimmer.

the return is on the right side of picture.
If this gets rid of what the algae ill be growing, then why have a protien skimmer?
Should i try to sell it?
And what do you think it should look like without the skimmer?

Do not get rid of the skimmer. Either of your ideas will work fine. Im useing the first design in a couple of different ways. I agree with Jeff that you need a larger area for the pump. When its running the level will go down in that area and if its to small you will run out of useable water to soon. The Macro will filter out the micro bubbles from the skimmer.
Let me know when you want to come and see my sump/fuge's. The tourch is haveing a very hard time. Its lost a couple of heads .

Rhine, is this a sump that already exists that you are looking to modify into an RDP refugium? If so, could you show us how it looks currently?

If I may comment... using tubs is fine. Nothing to be embarressed about. Upgrading to the use of glass or acrylic is not so wonderful as you may believe. Whatever the material they are made of, some designs are more prone to mishaps. In your setup, how does water move from one tub to the other? If it is a pump and the pump fails, what happens?
Also, It is not clear what you mean by drilling a hole to quiet the flushing. Drill a hole where?
I'm just trying to be helpful. Seeing the setup in the pic causes me some concern.

Rhine,
Skimmers are great, and I don't know anyone that skims enough to effect
the growth of algae(mangroves are a different story though). Also,
skimming removes DOCs (disolved organic compounds) from the water.
These are the large particles in the water. Algae removes nitrates,
phosphates, and others. So you want both in your design. On your
skimmer, if you already have it then by all means use it. I was
thinking that there was no real need to hang it if you had the room in
the sump. I thought that moving it inside the sump may allow you to go
with a larger tank/container. I think the eggcrate and bioballs are
overkill and you would be better off by getting some utah rock and
putting it in the refugium area. As Dion mentioned, the pump is going
to change the water level in the return area and you want enough water
volume there so that the water doesn't go to low and start sucking air
into the return. Also, you may want to up the flow at some time and it
would be a pain if the pump didn't fit.
One thing that you need to be aware of is the height of the baffles.
You need to make sure that the baffles are as high as the running water
level. After you turn off the pump the water will drain back into the
sump so on my 55g w/10g sump, I only run it at about 7g full and it
fills up when the pump goes out. This puts my baffles at about half the
height of the sump tank.

I guess this would help with a power outage as well .
I have a power backup battery on my tank, but a little extra security might help..
Thanks all.
I think ill take dion up on coming out to see his.. besides that maybee ill pick up my torch coral so he dont feel bad for killing it hahaha. just kidding Dion. maybee its just old and it was time for him to die.. Maybe ill give it to Mark to see if he can bring him back. i have seen mark's Ref and thats simple enough and works. but i want something a little more professional in case my cabinet doors dont fit. and even then ill ask Dion ( cabinet master )for help to modify this heheh..
