I need to increase flow in my 225 reef and am a little on the fence about what power head I should purchase. I don't have the money to pick up a Vortech and I've read that these Korilia Magnums are the next best thing and 1/4 the price.

Currently in my 225 I have 2 of the older Korilia 3's and 1 Korilia 2 and my main pump which is a Dolphin running at (I think) 3200 GPH. I've been told this is not enough flow for my take and I agree. I have several dead spots in the tank and algae incessantly growing in them. As for coral I have some softies, some LPS's and a few SPS's

I thought that 2 magnum 8's would be slam dunk until I read some of the customer reviews on Marine Depot on how it's too much flow (the few I read were with people who had 180 gallon tanks) and I don't know if they got just one or whatever.

So before I click the "Check Out" button my questions is, should I get 2 Magnum 6's, 7's, or 8's?
(so you don't have to look it up the 6's advertise at 2200 GPH, 7's at 2800, and 8's at 3250)

BTW I don't mind ditching the current korilias I have.

Thanks in advance.

Micah

I have 2 vortech mp10's on my 70 gal cube, 24x30x24 and it sounds crazy but sometimes i think i need more flow. i think 2 mag 7's would probably be fine thats a lot of gph if you times it by both. what are your tank measurements?

I think the tank dimensions are 6'x3'x3' (or something like that).

You should get 2 of the controllable magnum 8s(if there is such a thing) then you can dial there flow down if it is too much. Koralia has a few of the controllable models where you can turn flow up and down like a vortech. Just my 2 cents if that is possible for you.

The Magnum's are not controllable in that way but you can turn them on and turn them off (like for a wave maker). I think I'll just get 2 Magnum 7's and if it's not as much as I hoped I'll just run my other two Korillia 3's (but I think the 7's would be plenty).

MD ended up only sending one of the magnum 7's I ordered (the other will be coming in a week) but I got the one installed and WOW this thing sure does have some power. It is a little on the large size but it blends well with my black backdrop so it's not an eye sore.

I'll have to see how this guys goes but for now I'm pretty excited about the results. Thank you for your feed back everyone.

Ok so I got my second magnum 7 in yesterday and in my 225 these things rock! I would say it's not a little too much flow for my tast. I put the two on opposite sides of the tank somewhat facing each other and that did not work. It created whirlpools that reached down about a food. Crazy!

I think I have them where I want them now but some coral will have to be moved around so they don't get beat up but all in all this was a really good buy.

I know the new ones (rated by flow and not number) can be hooked to any wavemaker but I can't confirm that the Magnums are that way.  I believe they are but I can't find anything that says it.  Do you have yours on a wavemaker?  Has it turned off and on with no problems?

Thanks

They start and stop quietly (which is something to say since the older Korilias were very noisy). I was thinking about hooking them up to my Apex and turning them on and off but I've not decided yet. It would be nice but I've herd that with mag-drive pumps that are not set up for it, it can be bad for them. I'm not sure if that though. It's a good thought, I'll look into it.

Cool, let me know.  I think I may get some 6's or 7's for just constant flow and then get a few of the smaller ones for the surge.  Not sure yet.  Appreciate your help.
