    Posted: August 21 2012 at 11:32pm
The pump on my skimmer in my 90g is leaking ~50v into my tank so I'm looking for a replacement skimmer.  Anybody have any good suggestions for a skimmer?  It looks like skimmers are the cars of the reef hobby.  There are a million different makes, models, and price tags.  I'm just looking for the best quality for the best buck.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Clanure

What's your budget. What corals do you have? How many fish?

Elite Aquatics or a skimz 121. I have the skimz on my 90 and love it. Your more than welcome to stop by and check it out. I also have a mixed reef mostly sps and have about 25 fish.

Can you tell me where you purchased your skimz 121?  I've read a few reviews on it and it seems decent, but I don't see a whole lot of vendors out there.

My budget is in the 300-400 range but quality is most important.

Thanks,

IMO, Elite Aquatics hands down... the reason? Yes, skimz is good and so is Bubble Magus; but IF you ever have a problem or question or need a part - with EA you have a local manufacturing site and almost instant response and  excellent customer service...

I own a BM NAC7 cone on my 93 Cube. Nice skimmer and all. But when the impeller cracked and it stopped working, I was skimmerless for 8 days - because I had to order a replacement online at SoCalImports and then wait for it to be shipped. Looking back it sure would have been nice to call a local place like EA and have a new one by probably the next day, or maybe even sooner...

I checked out your website, but there weren't any in stock, so I wasn't sure if you were dealing directly with retail customers or if you were more of a wholesaler.  I'll head over to Aquatic Dreams to check it out.  As a local business owner, supporting the locals is a huge priority for me as well. What additional information can you give me about it?  Your website doesn't have a lot of information (due to the 'under construction' aspect of things, I'm assuming?)  What are it's overall dimensions and specs? Any type of warranty? I'm also assuming, because you recommended it, that it will have no problems handling my 90g with a mixed reef and low (5) fish bio-load?

Thanks for all the input.  I'm just making sure I do my homework before I purchase.

Clanure -

It's not my website, I'm not involved with the EA company at all. I just like their products.

But you can PM Elite Aquatics on this Board. Or just go over to Aquatic Dreams, they have the entire line of EA stuff there and can answer all your questions.

Oh, and (my opinion) the skimmer they recommended will handle your setup no problem.

The footprint is 8x8.5 and stands 22" tall. It will handle a 90 gallon no problem, its rated up to 200. This skimmer uses the awesome Sicce PSK-1000 its a high quality pump from a well know skimmer pump mfg. 90 day warranty.

I decided to go with the Elite Aquatics unit from Aquatic Dreams, but that has created a bit of a dilemma for me.  I guess not a dilemma as much as an opportunity for me to learn.  My sump is divided into 3 compartments.  The left side is a refugium, the middle has the socks and protein skimmmer, and the right is the return pump.  The old protein skimmer was plumbed to return water over into the fuge but that doesn't look possible with the EA unit.  Is it that critical, am I missing something?  I'm not sure exactly where to go from here?  Any help would be appreciated.

there is no need to have the skimmer dump into the refugium. does your sump have a bubble trap inbetween the skimmer chamber and return chamber?

Yes, it does. It has an area for a sponge/carbon bags between the skimmed and the return section. Thanks for the info!
