Anybody have any take on the new DTs phytoplanton? I understand it is a different size(s) than the old DTs. I used the old DT to start my culture in the basement, which has been serving our tank well. Is this new strain better?

The guy at From the Sea said I couldn't use it to start a new culture, but wouldn't tell me why. He said it is a secret way of growing it, under armed guard or something. Why wouldn't it grow like the old version? I think one size would eventually take over the culture, would that make it the same as I have now?

Any green farmers out there?

Mr FTS also said growing rotifers is a waste of time, they are worthless in nutrition.Anyboy have any input?

Suzy - I don't think it has anything to do with different sizes being able to culture it. I'm sure that DT's actually cultures each variety of algae seperatley and it is shipped to us mixed as all three. Check out their web site - DT's

I think if you were to start a culture with this mixture that one of the 3 would probably out compete the others and you would end up with just one strand of algae. This is just my opinion though and really don't have any real idea. I actually culture 3 different strains of phyto in the basement right now and mix them and feed at the same time, seems to work well this way.

I do, I haven't heard anything about them being useless though. I'll need to do some research.

The past owners of Mountain Corals, Tim, Joe and Cindy always said that the rotifers were a way to deliver a bag of Velvet Green (their proprietary species of single celled algae) to the coral so that it could be useful to the coral. Rotifers can fill up with something like 10 or 20 times their weight in algae!
If you are feeding rotifers to your tank without first giving them a meal of green, then yes they are useless.

P.S. That's why rotifers are sold in a bottle of greenwater!

I do feed my rotifers every two days with my phyto. cultures.

Can a species be proprietary?

Anyway - now that the boat season is "unofficially" over. I am thinking of starting a culture of green water and maybe rotifers. Does anyone have a bullet-proof method they would be willing to share (for free)?
