Topic: Sound wave effects on tank inhabitants? Posted: January 23 2004 at 12:24am |
I am setting up my 75 in my front room, which just so happens to house my home theater system, and an aptly named subwoofer, "the evil water heater". Beyond playing it too loud and cracking my tank... I was just wondering if there are any detrimental effects that low frequency sound waves could have on my reef inhabitants. The slope for my sub starts dropping off around 20 hertz, so we are talking some seriously low stuff. Also, my other speakers employ a "ribbon" tweeter, which evidently can hit some high frequencies.
Anyone?

Shane - Do a search on Reefcentral - I remember reading a pretty lengthy topic on just this. If I remember correctly I don't think there was an issue.

The ocean seems to be a pretty noisy place to me.

Speaking of ocean noise, I love listening to damselfish(clowns, damsels, etc) go tweet, grunt, bark, etc.
My old dwarf Lionfish used to make a big bark and a jump when another fish would nip at its long fins.
And then there's the pleasant tink tink tink of the mantis shrimp!
Shane, if you like the music, they will like it too. Watch them rock!

I may disagree in part. Natural sounds of the ocean are generally not in the same db levels as a loud stereo system. I would think that it would cause stress on the inhabitants. Similar to that little brat in "Nemo" tapping on the glass. And, since water carries sound so well, I would think that is may have detrimental effects and possibly cause them to be a bit jumpy and pretty unhappy. Try it and see how they react. Of course, it would greatly depend on distance from the speaker, volume level, pitch, etc... But, maybe they will get used to it. Just buy them all ear plugs I guess.

That was my concern. Where lower frequencies travel so well through things - I thought it just might be a shockwave sent into the water. The sub is probably 15 feet from the tank. Guess we'll see. I'll update everyone when I find out how they react.

And I agree with Carl... about the ear plugs
What is it about whale communication being low frequency and traveling for thousands of miles? I really don't know about this topic, but I wonder if our tanks are silent compared to the ocean?

I have 2 large subs (dual 10s 300 watts each) about 12 feet from my tank and I have not noticed any problems. As for the highs they will just reflect off the glass or acrylic.

If you stick your head in the tank, It is actually very noisy. The power heads and pumps generate quite a bit of noise. Its hard to hear it since the sound waves dont jump from water to air very efficiently. If you don't believe me, get your snorkel and mask and give it a try...not that I would know from personal experience

Touche. But, I think that excessive noise would be the biggest concern. And no hip-hop or rap. Marine animals HATE hip-hop and rap. No... honestly. There was a study somewhere.....

Am I the only one out there to stick my head in my tank. It jjust seemed natural to try it. Just my face to keep my hair out for contamination reasons!
I didn't get my ears in though. I'll have to try it to see how loud it is...
One thing you do notice when diving, when the bubbles are not too loud, is all the noise. Mostly crabs and such clicking. There is definite sound to a coral reef.

Haven't stuck my head in the tank yet, but I'm glad I wasn't the only person wondering about the noise level in there. The susuration of the sand in the ocean, plus lots of clickity crabs and coral munchers is actually fairly noisy. But I'll bet our pumps and sea swirls and lock lines are pretty noisy!

Just put your ear next to the glass and you will see how noisy it is.
