Topic: Help me out with skimmer sizing Posted: March 29 2013 at 7:26pm |
I've got a 93 gallon cube, and a 20 gallon sump. I'm either getting a Bubble Magus curve 5 or 7. Curve 5 140 gallons Curve 7 185-240 gallons Are these rating accurate? Can you go to big with a skimmer?

Curve 7 185-240 gallons for if you decide to have either a large bio load or upgrade in the future.

Curve 5. Don't oversize your skimmer, you will run into problems with it not skimming consistently if you oversize.

I don't know... I have a 93 Cube, 20 g sump and I am using a Bubble Magus NAC-7 and I think it is just right in terms of sizing and efficiency.
And it looks like the "Curve 7" is just a more recent version of the same design, with a little "coke bottle" shape twist, instead of a standard cone shape. Am I wrong?

The NAC-7 is rated at 130-185 so it's closer to the cuve 5 Curve 5 140 gallons Curve 7 185-240 gallons

I have a 78g display and a 30g sump . I tried Reef octopus 3000 sss and the fact is it is way to big , so I guess I learned an expensive lesson. That skimmer is rated at 300g . But if run bio pellets and have a very heavy bio load it may not be too big but for now I did down size .

Jordan I am thinking that you should go with the Curve 5. It is pretty close to what you have now and we both know how much I love you tank. Just think of the skimmer that you have now. The new skimmer would save you a lot on your power bill ($3-$6 a month) The sedra pumps seem to be power pigs.
Unless you are planning on adding a lot more fish or getting in to more SPS for the price would get the Curve 7 just keep the setting lower. Then if you need to you can turn it up the skimmer as your tank changes. With the way your tank is now I don't really see you needing any less skimming any time soon.
I love my new skimmer and it is so much better to clean.
