Topic: Advice on LED Lights Posted: August 25 2013 at 2:10pm |
I have 120 gal that is 24" x 24" x 48" I would like to change my light over to LED. Is there anyone that has 24" deep tank and running LEDS and what brand and how many. Looking for LED units already made or someone that can built a LED fixture to work with my tank. Please let me know, Thanks

I have a 150g (deep version of your tank...31" deep) that I'm convertingto LEDs. Because of the depth, I'm using 5W LEDs with optics. Total, it'll be about a 300w fixture, full spectrum. I'm actually doing the design for my graduate engineering thesis...so if you have questions about doing it yourself, I can try to help.

I run 3 AI Vegas over my 120. Its the same dimension as yours 4x2x2. I was originally running two but found one on here for a good price so i jumped on it. Lights work great at 24" depth. i believe i run mine at 50%. Three might be overkill but i am hoping to upgrade to a 6' tank soon.

I ran 4 vegas over a 4'150 (30" deep) I'm now running 3 vegas and 2 hydro's over my 234 which is 60x30x30.
Nothing against the diy guys. (cause I'm one) but be very careful with the cheap fixtures out there. You do get what you pay for. I don't want to start a fight here over them. SO pm me and I can explain what 3 years of cheap fixtures have brought us. Im tied to many maintenance companies and the experience and evidence is very telling.

In my research, I've found that some of the cheap fixture designs have caused tons of various issues (bleaching, poor growth, terrible maintenance, and have even started fires). If done right, a DIY fixture can match or exceed manufactured fixtures, but it requires a bit of effort.

I agree :) That's why I'm not against DYI. Done right it can be great. However some of the cheap ones on the market are pure crap.

Yea that's why I don't think it would be smart for me to do a DYI myself. I don't want a fire later on. I would pay someone that's experienced building LED lights before I try. I'm not and electrical person and don't want a fire or some other problem down the road.

I have to say I am loving my Kessil a350w "Tuna Blue" (tunable) LEDs. I have 2 over my 90 (24" tall, 18" W) and they are more than enough. I have clams on the sandbed and SPS 3/4 of the way down doing fine If you are a halide guy (like I was) you NEED TO check these guys out. They are designed differently from the standard LED fixtures that have dozens of optics spread out over a couple of square feet of fixture. My 2 fixtures total just 180 watts And the 'shimmer' effect these provide is actually better than my old halides!

I have 175w over my 150g 30" deep. Grows everything! Its designed for higher wattage so that is what is is actually pulling from the wall. I built it as a DIY with violet, royal blue, blue, cool white and neutral white LEDs.

There are lots of different LED options that will do wonders for a tank and corals. Personally I'm a fan, I run LED's on two of my tanks one is a 125g Show tank and the other is for one of my rare anemone propagation tanks. One of my favorite systems is the 160w Razor by Maxspect. It's not terribly expensive yet it is very good. Like I said there are tons out there just gotta find the right one (:

How does this sound for a light set up for my 48x24x24 tank. 2-Aqua Illumination Hydra LED Modules 1-controller Do you think this will work? Thanks

It will do good. If it was a little short you can always add another module.
