So I've got this great new skimmer that is working miracles on my tank. But I don't know how to adjust it. I have no idea what brand it is and I got it off the board by someone named Jake who works in WVC at his garage. Seems irresponsible of me right? I know but I have a memory like a sieve. If I put a pic up will anyone be able to tell me what it is and how to adjust it?

Pretty good chance that one of us has had that same skimmer, or that it adjusts the same way as others and we can help out. I would post the pic and let us see what we can do.

The one in that pic looks a lot like my ASM skimmer.   If so, under the sponge where the water comes out is a plastic pipe.  It's actually a pipe within a pipe and the one pipe slips up and down on the other so you can raise and lower the height at which the water exits the unit.  Moving it up will increase the "wetness" of your skimmate and down will make it dryer.  (Up=more water going the cup, down=less water in the cup.)  You need to find the happy medium you are looking for.

Since you have not had a Skimmer on this tank I would recommend that you skim wet for a couple of months to help remove as much accumulated waste as you can. Then you can lower it down and start going drier. Keep in mind that you can go too dry in which case the Skimmate attaches more to the skimmer neck than makes it into the cup. This means that you have to clean every couple of days even if the cup doesn't have much skimmate in it. So don't go quite that far if you decide to dry it up. i prefer a good medium for mine, where the cup nears full after a couple of days and then I clean the neck out at the same time.

If you really feel like getting fancy, you can attach a pvc gate valve mod.

Now if i understand it right you attach a gate valve to the top of the adjustable pipe.  This way to adjust it you don't have to stick your whole hand underwater and fight the pipe to move it up and down (mine is really hard to adjust).  I have a G3 and am thinking about doing that.  You'd have to adjust the filter that goes on top of the pipe so that it fits over the gate valve.  You can just slice it down one side, and then zip tie it back on though.  Sounds easy enough right?
