Can diatomaceous earth be used as a marine aquarium substrate or in a DSB?

Anything can be used, of course!

If you are asking if it would be a good idea, the answer is "No" for reef aquariums. The necessary substrate is that which offers minerals and water "conditioning" capability.

The immense kinds and numbers of organisms that need to grow in a reef aquarium in order to make it a healthy ecosystem also require an aragonite substrate.
