Read this article about Florida's new plan for dealing with invasive lionfish.

http://www.ksl.com/?sid=39516268&nid=1288&title=florida-to-host-competition-to-kill-invasive-lionfish

Statements & questions to help get the discussion going:

Is this a cool event or what?

Fish are food not friends!

Fish are friends not food!

Is this a cruel mistreatment of a living animal?

Its an invasive species that is eradicating native species and endangering the local ecology.

This is just a part of conservation.

Does conservation trump cruelty to animals?

We must eradicate the invasive lionfish in order to protect the native species.

Its a stupid fish who cares!

Now discuss nicely and respectfully please!

Its a Stupid Fish Who cares.....

Lol do I have to use an example?

Wanna hear something funny, a wholesaler can not sell lionfish to someone in FL ... but people in FL are always looking on list for them.... (to lazy to walk out the door and catch one)

No examples needed. Just curious about everyone's views on this and thought it might make for an interesting discussion.

It's a really cool competition. Also lionfish in restaurants in Florida is way cool.

Agreed. If they become a delicacy, the industry will eradicate them.

It's a way cool event. Just like the eradication of Caulerpa that had invaded San Diego Bay, I think it's a good thing to harvest and eat Florida Lionfish. It's been termed invasivorism or, eating the invader. Beer

The invasive fish I found in Hawaii streams were Guppies and Swordtails, originally from Central and South America. The difference between this and Florida Lionfish is that, to my knowledge, Guppies and Swordtails didn't eat the natives. Wink

Unfortunately, there are hundreds of invasive species in Hawaii and they severely changed the ecology of the islands. Rats and Dogs completely wiped out the flightless birds that used to live there. Mongoose were originally introduced to control Rats but since Rats are nocturnal and Mongoose are not, both Mongoose and Rats have flourished.

Aloha,
Mark  Hug
